ZS Monthly Postal Match

For last year or so, ZS members have been keeping up their zombie hunting marksmen skills by taking part in our monthly postal match. A postal match is a shooting contest that takes place by mail. All the contestants download standardized targets, shooting them as instructed in the rules, and send them in to our judge via post (in our case post mail or e-mail).

Knots

Rope is useful. I thought I’d start this article with at least one sentence that no one can argue with. Rope has been used to aid survival since prehistoric times, and has changed very little in construction over that time. Knowing how to correctly use rope means knowing how to tie knots. They give your line form and function. In this article I’d like to go over some of the more common and useful knots so that should you ever need that paracord in your BOB, you’ll know how to use it.

I’ll start with a simple stopper knot. A stopper knot is tied in a length of line to stop it going through a hole. This is mostly used for rock climbing and sailing but it has all sorts of uses. The most common stopper knot would be an overhand knot, where you make a loop and feed the end through. Everyone knows how to tie that knot. Unless it is under constant tension however it can come undone. This is why I prefer a figure eight knot. It’s more secure and just as easy to tie. Heres how to do it:
