Camelbak Motherlode Gear Review

Filed under: Equipment — Raptorman @ 9:32 am

I was in the desert for one day when I decided to pick up a new camelbak. I did some internet research, and decided on the Camelbak “Motherlode.” Besides the shitty name, this pack has exceeded all my expectations. I needed a pack that could carry the following;

1. Two, (4) inch thick aircraft “owners manuals.”
2. One 5 x 5 x 8 publication bag for my high/low charts and approach plates.
3. A survival kit in case I go feet dry and need a band-aid. (kit is the size of a pop-tarts box.)
4. My lunch (usually a couple hot pockets.)
5. 100 oz of water (3 liters). < --very important when operating where I'm at.
6. My desert flight suit (I have to wear civilian clothes to and from the airfield for security reasons.)
7. My back-up handheld GPS, in case the military issued one shits the bed (built by the lowest bidder.)
8. My Leatherman Wave multi-tool.
9. A spare set of sunglasses, because it would suck to be shot down in the desert, and suck even more to be shot down in the desert with no sunglasses.
10. My aircraft checklist.
11. Various other small items such as pack of gum, and some Iraqi money (never know).
My new pack

Crystal Radio Receiver

Filed under: Equipment, Survival — Mr. Pugsly @ 9:33 am

A subject of great interest among survivalists is the BoB, or bug-out bag, the emergency supplies you would carry on your back if you had to evacuate due to a hurricane, earthquake, or zombie attack. They debate long and loud about what should be in your BoB, the best type of BoB to have, and how to carry your BoB. Of particular interest is how to make your BoB as light as possible. You might have to move quickly, and you’ll regret bringing that portable TV if the undead are on your heels. You can even buy a small survival kit in a sardine can at your local sporting goods or camping store.

I have several small items in my BoB that take up virtually zero space and would provide me with the ability to listen to AM and shortwave radio transmissions. With just a tiny diode, resistor, earphone, and some wire, you can build a crystal radio receiver. I keep all of these in a small envelope in my BoB.
