Ponds are an excellent source of food and water than can easily be made potable. The amount of fish that a small farm pond supports is often more than enough to provide all of the protein a family needs during a season. Ponds can also be an excellent way to help attract other wildlife such as ducks and deer to an area. Ponds can also be built on a stream or creek to make a reservoir for a hydroelectric system.

Pond Livestock

Typically the main purpose and feature of a pond is for its fish. The fish that stocked in a pond will determine what sort of food it is able to provide and what the fishing will be like. Most farm and other small ponds are based upon Bass and Bluegill. Some fish will be self-sustaining in a pond, while others will have to be periodically restocked to maintain a population.

Pond Building

Pond building is a relatively simple process of digging a whole in the ground and possible building a berm around it; selecting a proper building site is a somewhat more complex matter. A good location should be low-lying and not downhill from crop or other harmful run-off.

Pond Management

Once a pond has been built, it should be relatively self-sustaining outside of any special needs fish. Occasionally a pond may need to be renovated (drained and stripped of plant life or chemically sterilized), but ponds can remain healthy indefinitely without any of these procedures. Maintaining a proper balance of fish by removing the correct quantity of predatory fish (especially bass) is important.

Proper Stocking Method

Specific Issues and How to Manage Them

  • Small Bass - The bass population has become larger than the available prey can sustain, remove a large quantity of bass to reestablish balance.
  • Plant Overgrowth - Introduce a plant eating fish or renovate the pond.
