Understanding Mudslides
A mudslide is caused by heavy rains and/or snow melt which saturates the ground until it can no longer support its own weight. Once at that point it begins to slide downhill taking out trees, boulders and anything man-made in its path.
Preparing for a Mudslide
Anyone that lives on or beneath the slope of a hill should evaluate their property for the likelihood that a mudslide may occur. If the slope can be shored up with rock, fencing, or natural vegetation it should be. A retaining wall may need to be built as well. In cases where the slope is on other people's land or on public property then community action must take place to mitigate the danger of mudslides. Also one's insurance needs to be checked to see if there is coverage for property loss due to a mudslide.
Mudslide Aftermath
In the immediate aftermath of a mudslide check for injuries and perform a building damage assessment. Contact your community public works agency or other authorities for assistance in clearing roads, turning off broken utilities, etc. Contact your insurance provider to file a claim. Evacuate to your bug out location if necessary.
