Forceps include any of a number of medical hand held tools intended for grasping or clamping. These tools are typically plier or tweezer like and serve many different specific purposes, though some types are more versatile than others. Forceps should be included in a BOB or first aid kit both for their intended medical purposes and other tasks.

Types Of Forceps

There are many different types of forceps, these are some of the more common ones:

Thumb Forceps

Commonly called "tweezers" by lay people these use thumb pressure to close the forceps to grasp the targeted object.

Locking & Kelly Forceps

Kelly forceps (aka Rochester forceps) are perhaps the most familiar locking type hemostat, as they are featured in many different medical scenes on TV and in movies. They are similar in appearance to scissors, but with ends more like small needle nose pliers that have a locking clamp in the center.
