Decongestant

Congestion can be a symptom of many different ailments such as a cold, allergies, flu, and more. It is generally little more than a nuisance in a modern settings, but when peak physical performance is required it can be a significant problem for respiration. For this a reason a decongestant should be included in any first aid kit.

Usage

Congestion can occur in various parts of the respiratory system, a good decongestant should clear up all of them.

  • Nasal/Sinus - Nasal congestion is one of the most common forms of congestion to be treated with a decongestant, it interferes with breathing and can also cause mild to severe head aches.
  • Chest/Lung - Decongestant are also useful for clearing the chest/lung of congestion such as mucus.
  • Nose Bleed - A nasal decongestant called Xylometazoline, marketed under brand names such as Otrivin, can be used to stop a nose bleed.

Side Effects

Most decongestant tend to cause generic side effects such as dry mouth, head ache, constipation, etc...
