Usage
Aspirin became extremely popular at the turn of the 20th century and has since been used to treat many different ailments.
Pain
Aspirin is best known for its use as a pain reliever, and is still used by many people today in preference to newer pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
Fever
Aspirin can be used to reduce fever, though it is not used as often for this purpose as it once was.
Inflammation
Aspirin is used for treating inflammation and swelling.
Heart Attack
In recent years aspirin has been shown to help prevent and reduce the severity of heart attacks, but this is a relatively new indication and still requires study.
Side Effects
Aspirin has become less popular due to its side-effects as it causes more problems than most of its alternatives.
- Digestive Problems - Aspirin as become known, perhaps even infamous for, causing stomach ache and similar digestive system problems.
- Reye's Syndrome - Reye's syndrome is a potentially fatal systemic condition that effects children given aspirin while they have a viral infection. When treating children, other drugs such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen should be used instead of aspirin whenever possible.
- Bleed Out - due to aspirin's anti-clotting/anti-coagulant properties is should never be administered to someone who has experienced trauma and is bleeding or may be bleeding internally.
- Overdose Toxicity - Aspirin can be toxic, even to the point of fatality, if overdosed.
