Tyvek Mouse-Tarp...or a Dry Spot for NFA

Postby Jamie » Sat Apr 19, 2008 4:17 pm

I brought a square of tyvek along on my MBO last weekend, and found it to be a definite winner in the weight and space to utility ratio...

I used it as a waterproof seat, a cover for my pack while I set up my camp, and a dry spot to stand on to change my clothes/shoes/socks...if you have to bug out in wet weather, this is a cheap and easy way to help you stay dry that takes up literally no room in your bag...

While mailing some stuff to my sister this morning, I screwed up on when addressing the tyvek envelope, had a lightbulb moment, and brought the messed up envelope home after I was done in town...

The Priority envelope is 11.625" by 15.125"

I cut the envelope along one long and one short seam, and cut off the closure flap... which yielded a tyvek mouse-tarp about 2 feet by a little more than a foot...

Here you can see the mouse-tarp with one of my boots on it...the tyvek isn't as small as it looks, my boots are fucking enormous...

It folds up to make an incredibly tiny package, smaller in all dimensions than a packet of Lipton Cup-a-soup...

It is important to note that you shouldn't just take tyvek envelopes from the USPS, I took the one I screwed up on as it was going into the garbage otherwise...but I do get them in the mail from time to time...

Postal service breathes sigh of relief and returns to raising the price of stamps and plotting the demise of email..

Now why the hell didn't I think of that? I probably toss one of those things a month.

That's a really cool idea. It rains a lot in my home town, and even when it's done raining everything will still be wet for days. Some summers I don't think it ever dries out.

I don't get much mail, would it be possible for me to just buy a tyvek envelope from the post office? I'm not overly familiar with tyvek, other than seeing houses wrapped in it every once in a while. If I ask for a tyvek envelope will they know what I'm talking about? Are those white, blue, and red envelopes typically made of tyvek?

You'll know it if you feel it. It doesn't feel like paper and it's very hard to tear open (always cut mine open).. It feels more like a plastic like cloth with a little grainy threading. It also makes an odd sound when handled, like the sound of really thick christmas wrapping paper, muffled while being crumpled up (if you can picture that sound in your head)
