While walking around homedepot yesterday my wife ran across this in the discontinued rack. These were going for $99 new last year (we looked at one just to say we did) and it was marked down to $24, well needless to say she got one. I took it apart last night and did an inventory of it. Here are the contents.

When you open the box everything is already packed into the backpack. In the front zippered pocket are the following item's:

2 mylar blankets
2 N95 masks
2 "D" batteries
2 "AAA" batteries
9 antiseptic wipes
1 disaster family plan paper
Image

the balance of the kit is in the main compartment of the backpack which has the following items:

1 am\fm radio
2 ponchos
3 12 hour chem lights
1 10' roll of duct tape
1 firstaid kit
2 pair of gloves
1 flashlight
2 10 litter water bladders
4 12 portion food ration blocks (8 bars(200 calories per bar) per day per person)
30 4.22oz drinking water packages
1 medical kit (a basic kit)

First thing I would is to toss the flashlight and replace it a better one.
The Tylenol/Aspirin/antibiotic items in the med kit expired last year so thats going to be updated.
The food bars are still good for 2 years.
the water pouches have no expiration date so I'll figure out the use by date.
For $24 it's a good starter kit and needs to be updated and expanded on a little to make it a great kit.

That was a heack of a deal for $24. If you ordered the emergency rations and water online you would have paid more once you include shipping. Nice find.

Just did some research, the water has a 5 year shelf life so It's good for 2 more years yet.

actuly, the water would last for ever sealed like that.. distled/purified water has no shelf life.

i have eaten those bars and they are good, i have 10 blocks of them in my basement.

when you want to add new food bars, look here, they have the best prices

Good score.

The first thing I'd do is lose the packaging on the radio and put it in something like two ziplocs, for waterproofing, rather than that display blister pack.

Me too. Or at least gotten as much as I could afford, this would be a good thing to throw in the back seat of my car, in my closet, etc.

Great find. I'm going to hit my local Home Depot tommorrow and see if they have any. So far I haven't had any luck finding any of these type of clearance sales locally, but maybe my luck will change.

No joy at the local HD. They said they haven't had those for quite awhile. I'm going to call around tommorrow and see if any other HD's in the area have these.

Not a bad score at all. Hey Trebor, I will stop today at the Depot in Howell and send you a IM if I find anything.

Yeah, that seems like a better start on an emergency kit than some others I've seen. They're always woefully lacking in food and water. At the original price, I would have passed, but for $24 that's a great deal. The Datrex bars alone would cost that much.

Thanks much. If they have one I'll make a trip to get it.

Well keep in mind the target market. This is something for that weekend person who is going from being prepared for 12 hours to 72. You pointed out that it is very little water. Is it enough to get home or to a Red Cross shelter? There would more than likely be water there. Same with food. It is enough food to keep your stomach from hurting but they are not really planning on that person walking a lot and most Americans have plenty of fat stores from which to draw.

Baby steps.

Yeah, the SKU would be helpful, if you can find it. I've been calling around my local HD's and they haven't known what I was talking about. If I had the SKU they could just punch it into the system and tell me right away.

I did a little on-line searching and I know why I couldn't find this in my area. It looks like it was only sold in the South East, specifically in flood/hurrican areas. The kit came out in 2004 or 2005 and appears to be discontinued now. I couldn't pull it up on the HD website. (Although maybe I could with a SKU).

So, anyone who finds one of these, grab em before they are gone.
