Remember that gym rope, boat davit safety line or tree rope with evenly spaced knots? Here is my attempt at a tutorial......

Start at opposite end of line..
Over hand loop

Repeat over and over until desired length

I don't know how I missed this thread! You guys make me jealous.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prusik
I don't do much ascending, but when I do, I just use two runners, each tied in a Prusik. I use long runners, so that I have a hand on each knot and a foot in each loop. Bear in mind that we use separate safety ropes with a rope grab, or some other sort of tie off, so the ascending line is just for positioning, not safety.
I'll take some photos next time I do some rigging at work. We do some neat stuff that might enrich the thread a bit.

Good for passing tools down or dipping swab into ocean to clean.

I swung it over my head, Conan style (the Barbarian, not the tv guy) to make sure it was really secure. Nothing broken here.

One of my favorite pieces of fancy work, and you will find it on most of my lanyards and fobs, is the Lanyard Knot/Sailor Knot/Diamond Knot.

Image
Image

I like it because it dresses up a couple loose strands and is better looking than a double over-hand - thought that can be elegant in it's own right.

First, you start with a carrick bend:
Image
Different colored cord for detail. Practice this one for awhile first. This is the hardest part of the lanyard knot.

Also notice how the ends are going back over themselves and are also shooting off in opposite directions? You need that, it is a characteristic of the carrick bend and key to finishing the lanyard knot.

I'll finish posting the lanyard knot later... practice the carrick bend first though until you can do it without looking at pictures. I barely can!!

Awesome! I love the lanyard knot, I haven't tied it in a long time either.

As for the Carrick Bend, also a great knot, beautiful for decorative stuff. Also useful as a joining knot. This is one of the knots I've practiced with closed eyes, I just tried it again too, had to do it twice though-it's been a while. The trick is over, under, over, under, over, under.

Good on you!

I can't do the carrick with closed eyes but I can get it without a tutorial  Yeah, it is pretty handy sometimes too, especially when you're bending some line toghether and you need it to shoot back on itself.

Any ways, here's a carrick bend in a loop that will be my lanyard soon.
Image
The loop at the bottom is going to be the bight that attaches to my tool.

Image
Now, this 'aint the best picture to show how you finish it but you take your bitter ends and go over your stays (that little loop) and then into the center hole of the carrick bend. Do this with both ends. Over the stay, under the mess, through the middle and up.

Image
One through...

Image
The other one through. Notice my finger on the bight on the bottom.

Image
Pull it tight and clean it up by working the bight/stays down.

You don't need it real tight when it is done but you can heave around a bit and get it that way if you need to.

Image
I also roll it between my fingers a bit and let it work it's way together on it's own.

You should end up with this:
Image

I like to use this to start and end a longer braid or plait of some kind. It also looks good on just a straight lanyard. Hope this is helpful to some. I know there are better tutorials on the net but this one is mine! This knot is tough at first but after you do it about 12 times you'll get it. I found the key is the carrick bend to start with and finishing it right.

Handcuff knot.

Ever thought if you had to secure an assailant, what would you do?
Some CHL/CCW people carry cuffs with them. Here is another thought.

Here is my illustration. I had the help of one of my children and I tied in front of his/her hands.
It would best be served to do the opposite and do this behind the back.

Field expediant handcuffs. I assure you they can be quite secure, but are no substitute for metal cuffs.

Anyone ever made an emergency/repelling/climbing harness? If so, how well do these field expedient harnesses work? I have seen Marines use them on the Mountain warfare school Military channel show. But thats the only time I have seen it. Thanks.

Well, here is one, I'll keep looking:
http://www.mountain-survival.net/chapte ... mbing.html

I made one and used it to rappel about 20' once, mine wasn't very comfortable(being seat only), but it worked in a pinch.

I'm not sure I remember how i did one but I "rapelled" (more like slowed my fall to a manageable level) using a system kind of like the one above. I did it in the Navy and we were just messing around one day on the side of the ship while painting it from a paint float. We tried all kinds of stuff but that rappeling knot messed up my crotch real good and all the other deck apes laughed a lot.

ETA: Awww... reading further I know exactly why mine didn't work:
1) no training
2) I didn't secure my upper body.
