Dead Space

Postby KiLLPooL » Sun Jan 11, 2009 1:17 am

I did a search, and was surprised no one had mentioned this game!

It's a PS3/360/PC sci-fi horror game, set aboard a deep space mining vessel overrun by an alien virus that infects and transforms the dead into gory, gruesome, quick and hostile creatures. While not "zombies" in the traditional sense, they are in fact reanimated corpses with a taste for human flesh. The means of dispatching these space zombies, however goes against most of the undead lore we've come to consider common knowledge, which makes this game refreshing. You use laser cutting tools (you're a miner, not a space marine) to dismember them, limb by limb, as opposed to destroying the head.

Image

There is also a comic tie-in, as well as an animated movie both set in the same universe.

Zombie gamers looking for something a little different in between rounds of Witch killing, Smoker slaying and Tank bustin' in Left4Dead, I highly recommend this fresh take on the horror genre of my favorite past time.

It is a great came for the console. The PC version I was alittle annoyed with when it would not let me use the directional keys to control my movement. Some of the bosses can be irritating but the game has the right feel for it. Almost like the Original Alien.

I've played the Silent Hill and Resident Evil series, and wasn't disappointed by Dead Space.
Played through on hard, and it almost scared the shizzles out of me. The sound design is remarkable.

In my opinion it was the best game of 2008 . A year with tons of great games.

Aside from that stupid meteor shooting bit , it was pretty close to flawless.

I was going to ask a question about that very thing. I've been browsing screenshots on http://www.giantbomb.com and noticed the suits are different but I've only seen two different types. Can anyone give some info on how they are different, maybe some shots of them perhaps? Thanks in advance.

Oh and I just found these, thought they were pretty cool so decided to share them. Sorry about the third one being a link, it's so big I can't put it here but didn't want to do just a thumbnail of it. While the armor looks interesting it would be rather ineffective. There are far too many gaps in it which are much too wide. Still, it's a cool look.

I think the 3rd pic was the level 5 suit. I finished the game with the level 5 and was awarded the level 6. It looks like one of the unlockable suits from Halo 3. Whenever the opportunity came up I upgraded my suit. It caused me to be low on cash at times and forced me to beat several enemies to death, but it was worth it.

Why would there be a money system in a game where the character is on a derelict spacecraft dead in space and must battle demon/zombie like mutated humans with mining tools? Why would you need to beat enemies to death because you spent money on better armor, how would this affect your weapons?

There is a very limited amount of ammo/resources on the game. You gain ammmo/resources from fallen enemies or basically go to atms and purchase them. This really forces you to budget your ammo and choose your upgrades and weapon purchases very carefully. I didn't mind it though; it really added to the sence of desperation and made the game more challenging.

Sounds interesting just strange to encounter an ATM in a space vehicle. What are the different armor levels like, anything beyond increased protection or are there other enhancements? Could someone take screenshots, I can't find anything online that says what is what?

It's a huge planet cracking mining ship. It has an internal monorail to transport it's crew around it's that big. Whilst a lot of the ship is damaged and over run with horrific monsters it still has power, for the most part, and it's systems still function. So to access gear you have to scavenge parts, plans and money from the dead and then find an automated store to equip what you need.

Hope that explains the ATM on a spaceship thing.

Better suits take more damage, allow you to carry more items, and look cooler.

How much do I love DS?! So much! This is one creepy game. The sound (and lack thereof) is genius. I admit, I used some MS points to purchase the Tank Suit and I practically walked through enemies. I don't play games for the challenge so much as for the experience so I'm cool with that. Much like in real life, I stockpiled ammo like it was my job! I dd learn that if you carry fewer weapons (or multiple versions of the sane weapons) you are more likely to get ammo for your primary weapon. Also interesting is the fact that the only real gun in the game isn't very effective against the majority of the enemies.
The zero-g sections had me quite disoriented, but they were a nce change of pace. My least favorite part was the asteroid shooting section. Can't wait for the sequal!

Well, when you get there, the ship is an overrun hell-hole, but before that it was not just a ship, but a whole society. The crew lives on the ship for years at a time, so it needs all kinds of people. Engineers, cooks, janitors. It has apartments and I think even a restaurant. So just about anything you'd see on Earth needs to be on the ship. Including ATMs and automated stores.

Since Isaac isn't a soldier, he relies on engineering tools to fight of the necromorphs (are they really zombies?). All his tools use "ammo" and if he runs low, the only place to get more ammo is... by buying them from the vending machines.

So... he has to scrounge up money, because he can't just crack the machines open. If I had to, I could probably crack open a soda machine to stay alive, but if there was money lying around, I'd go that route.

One of the brilliant twists of the game is that the 'economy' does makes sense. It seemed weird to me at first, but if you think about it, scrounging up money to keep his tools running makes complete sense.

Love this game. Played it three times and it still made me jump the last time through.

Did you find the hidden doll that was worth 30,000 credits?

Maybe I'm not as good a gamer as I think, but I can't get past the stupid meteor shooting part. It's really pissing me off. Otherwise, I love this game!

It's not you.
SPOILER
Concentrate on shooting those towards the center, and letting the stragglers by unless their big ones. The ones that take 4% or less are ok, but don't let the big 15% ones by. You'll get through with 10-15% remaining.
It worked for me.

No prob. You gotta run it about a half dozen times tho, to guarantee sucess. And save AS SOON AS YOU WIN so that if something else kills ya, you don't have to do it all again.
