.....or is it from the gasses created inside the body during decomposition

yes...

You could say that zombies do it instinctively, using the lungs, without the need to oxygenate the blood. But to answer your original question, the air comes from the atmosphere.

If they're able to eat then they should be able to breathe.

Hang in a morgue sometime, or talk to a morgue attendant......lots of dead people moan, fart, etc

You use your lungs to draw in air which you then use to put oxygen in your system and also to talk, moan, yell, roar, etc. It's understood zombies don't need to breathe. But that doesn't necessarily mean they can't use their lungs to make noise. After all, they're moving other parts of their bodies right?

Hey, just started a new blog. Updates 3 times a week. I'd love feedback. Plus it should be pretty entertaining.

Makes you wonder if a zombies heart would beat then? If breathing is an action that is just carried over after death.

Maybe its just a basic animal instinct. Like a dog growling or something?

If they would the "zombies" that are infected but still have some functions such as their heart still beating, then it would make sense for them to breathe. But if they are reanimated corpses, dead people can still expell air so the moaning could be air that got into the body via openings in the body by natural or decomposition means and is being pushed out by the zombies movements.

I wish the zombie lit writers would form a consensus of such things as this. Or perhaps you simply have to suspend your disbelief for a while. Some zombies have been so, uh, devoured before they rose again, they may not even have lungs to draw in enough air to make them moan. Also, the more they decompose, the more they lose heart and lung function. Try this: hold your breath for 30 seconds and see if you can moan. No? Told ya!

You gotta take zombies in a case by case basis. They were human afterall and everybody knows we are crazy as fuck and do shit that makes no sense. Therefore its safe to assume that regardless of biology you will find some zombies moan...while others are silent.

Could also be a form of primitive communication to draw more zombies to an area.
