I opt for calling them a gaggle. It just rolls of the tongue. For example, "look of there a gaggle of zombies.".

I like a "shuffle",if it's just 2 or 3.

I recently got a copy of An Exultation of Larks, but unfortunately, it didn't have an entry for zombies.

But bees and termites DO work together. There has been no proof that zombies do anything coordinated. They are just drawn to the same targets so they appear to work together.

Romero had zombies working together in Land of the Dead.

I think we should change the name according to the group size.

1 = zombie
2 = zombies
3 to 5 = A shamble of zombies
6 to 10 = A pack of zombies
10 to 25 = A horde of zombies
26 to 50 = A lawfirm of zombies
50 to 99 = A zound of zombies
99+ = A Whole Shit Load of Zombies or AWSLOZ

Just found this thread--neat

I like the idea of calling geographic pockets of zombie infestation "caskets" or "coffins," as in, "Look out for the casket east of the high school"

A group of zombies on fire would be a 'conflagration'. :D

During a world wide infestation, they'd probably be called by a military name equivalent to their number. Eg: Platoon, Company, Battalion, Brigade, etc

It might not sound cool but it would allow military personel to accurately report the size of the threat to other units.

Infantry Scout: "Alpha One Delta Four Four, this is Charlie One Bravo two six, estimate Brigade sized unit of Zeds travelling in the open East of my position, request fire mission, over!"

I see a problem with specific group names.

I'm not really going to be taking the time to count how many zombies are bearing down on me and reference my handy zombie field guide for the right term.

The only term I've seen thus far I can see myself using is "shitload"
So it's either going to be: "We've got a zombie coming in from the north"

or

"There's a handful of zombies moving west"

or

"Oh f*** there's a shitload of zombies bearing down on us!"

A "shamble" sounds proper but it doesn't enounce well. I like a "Zed" of zombies. Simple, easy and to the point. When being chased down by Zeds, the last thing you want, is to not remember what to call them. You don't want the last thought in your mind to be, "Arrrghhh! brought down by a shamble!"....just doesn't sound right. I'd rather say, "holy ****! That's a huge zed!" See, just sounds better.

I vote for mob.

mob (plural mobs)

1.An unruly group of people.
2.A commonly used collective noun for animals such as horses or cattle.

ok,.. this needs a poll. seriously.

for less than a dozen zombies,.. a "SHUFFLE".

I say a group of Zombies, numbering less than 50ish but more than 12 is a "STAGGER". This isn't a hard rule, but If you see a small to medium group of zombies,.. the term "STAGGER" seems appropriate.

For 50 to 100ish zombies, Id say "mob".

For a larger group,. id say "HORDE". This is for when there are several hundred of buggers coming down the street.

Hows that sound? and if we got several "Hordes", then we have the "BATFU"**

And "STAGGER" and "HORDE" seem like the 2 best names.

1. shambles, (used with a singular or plural verb) a. a slaughterhouse.
b. any place of carnage.
c. any scene of destruction: to turn cities into shambles.
d. any scene, place, or thing in disorder: Her desk is a shambles.

1. to walk or go awkwardly; shuffle.

Love "a shamble of zeds"

My favorites are (in order).

1. A shamble of zeds
2. A stagger of zeds
3. A horde of zeds
4. A mob of zeds
5. A gang of zeds

Hey! I'm new here and I f'ing love zombies!

I think "stagger" is the perfect word for a group of zombies...

Another suggestion might be a "femur"

I like "stagger" for a few, "horde" for a whole throng.

Even if there's "offical" names for groups of zombies, people would resort to "couple" "pack" and "fuckload," unless of course you've got an annoying nerd in your survival group who keeps correcting you.
Me myself would probably use fuckload and horde to death...

I like "stagger" of zombies, too.

But what about the modern, fast "zoombie" type?

I suggest "pack", like a pack of wolves.
