Lawnmower as anti zombie tool (Total edit)...

Postby Hollow Point » Tue May 03, 2005 11:56 pm

Ok, it's apparent to me that this topic has gone somewhere I totally didn't intend it to go. Judging from some of the replies, it seems I wasn't clear about what I was talking about, so I scrapped the old post, and and trying again.

Now, if you look at the above links, do you think the above weapon, a blade mounted to an engine for the purposes of slicing zombies in half, could make a successful transition from computer game to real life, either as depicted in the above pictures, or modified in some way?

The lawnmower in the title comes from my thoughts that a lawnmower would be easier to use instead of the car engines in the pictures, since it's lighter, easier to move and ready to go as is, and a thin wire-piano wire maybe, as it's really strong, attached to the engine shaft like a weedwhacker line, would work better than the blades depicted in the pictures, since you wouldn't have problems with balancing when a zombie stumbled in and got chopped.

Uh, this is by no means a new idea. See Dead Alive.

Dead Alive...that the one where he straps a lawnmower to his chest and cuts the zombies up with it?

If it is, then HP does have a new idea. (in the sense that he copied it from HL2 and not Dead Alive.)

If you bother reading it, it states that he wants to mod some kind of engine to spin 2 huge blades horizontally at about head height. Then place some kind of noise making device with some kind of bait under it, so when the zombies go for the bait...they get their heads chopped off.

Very different from picking up a lawnmower and using it as a weapon.

Doesn't sound like a good plan. Sounds dangerous, in fact.

Plus... The blades or wires would probably either break or get tangled on making contact with zombies.
If you drop a zombie, does that count as a kill?

...Think about it.

I'd like to score one of those huge truck-like snow trucks with the snowblower attachment on it. The only problem as I see it will be all the gore of zombie-parts flying out of the shute.Everyone in the cab and outside of it better be in one of those 'containment' suits like in outbreak 'cause the chunks are gonna fly!VVVRRROOOMMM!

I'll just ram into zombies with my lawn tractor. With a good 200lbs going 10mph, that's enough to flatten a zombie, then get mutalated by the blades. :D
Whats worse...Zombie outbreak or the comeback of disco?

Weedwhacker with stiff blades would work quite well.
True, the only thing you would have to deal with is spatter.

Only problem I can see with that is its open cab as well as its extreme slowness. You could probably cobble together a rudimentary cab of sorts but that leaves the speed issue. Somehow I don't think a nitrous oxide setup ala Fast and the Furious is the answer.

Nitrous? She'd probably blow up.

I think it'd be easy enough to jimmy-rig a little closed pit for the driver -- Just need a couple of welding torches, maybe an hour or two, and you've got a nigh-impenetrable cockpit. Use a plasma cutter to cut eye-slits for the driver, and you're set (although driving it effectively would probably be extremely difficult with the cut-off vision).

...In retrospect, I am kind of upset at myself for thinking about it.

I was watching most shocking moments caught on tape and some guy had cut three toes of his left foot so it may have potential.

Like the chainsaw, weedwacker, sawzall, etc., etc., it will need gas or electricity- both of which are too high a commodity in the PAW.

It's unwieldy, and although to god it would be fun to see limbs and heads get minced to bejesus, it can't happen.

Use the blades themselves as hand-to-hand combat. Iz callz it a slingblade...

You all have the wrong idea, don't make an uber steamroller, make an uber bulldozer killdozer style.

Yep it really did happen, read all the links for pics and details, only problem would be getting out of it, and refueling it, but then again you won't have to worry about gunfire and the national guard targeting it

No no no.. You gotta make a coral. Lure the zombies into it and turn on the blades, you'd haev a zombie devouring machine. How is that not a good idea?

If you're all for sitting there and waiting the zombies out, then fine. I'd want to make gathing supplies a little safer by thinning out the hordes... Thin them say.... Into a fine slurry.

i tinkered a lot with lawn mowers (bolth push and self propelled), weed wackers, and chainsaws when i was a teenager, and this kind of stuff just dosent work. for one the blade is directly attached to the crank shaft so as soon as it hits something the whole thing shuts off. secondly in order to get a chain that is heavy enough to withstand impact, it become too heavy to start.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof, is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

It doesn't have to be a lawnmower blade specificaly. In halflife they were big motors with blades. Maybe not for long term but to help you fight off a large horde maybe...

I don't often think of small group zombie fighting, there doesn't seem to be much dynamic to it. At least not until we know how they move and react.
I always think of ways to fight the horde.

What about the zombie smashing car? That's gotta count for something.

Lure them into a rock quarry with one of those stone crushers. That or a junkyard where they have one of those immense metal chippers used on cars.

There needs to be some large zombie devouring mechanizm, like a furnace, a smasher, gouger, spinner, tumbler, slicer, polisher, spanker or a grinder!
