what

Jumbie (a juju zombie)

still what

I might be wrong but I think magic is called juju in voodo, therefor you gave your good juju and bad juju. Zombies are considered bad juju so a voodo zombie would be a Jumbie. Its a play on words

In vodoun a JuJu is a fetish (also called a charm, amulet, whatever) which you carry for luck or protection or something like that. The "bad juju" bit is stupid white people misinterpreting traditional Haitian and African beliefs. Just like somehow getting the word "voodoo" from vodoun. (pronounced vuh-dough-uhn. Also in use is "vodun" pronounced "voe-done" and "vodou" pronounced "vuh-dough") Why someone would say that a "more proper" way of saying zombie is jumbie is beyond me. That's just dumb. Not meaning to insult people, but seriously. I already pointed out that
bgaesop wrote:Plus, zombie was originally spelled zombi. The latter is now used as an alternate spelling to differentiate between what we think of as zombies and voodoo zombis. And the plural is just adding an "s."

In that I used "voodoo" because most people don't know what "vodoun" means.

Seriously, where did you get that idea, infinityboy and shmerlin?

I didn't get the idea, I was just trying to explain what I thought he was talking about. If this isn't what he was talking about then sorry for the misunderstanding.

As for the way I explained it, I have no experiance vodou, I do know that when I was in the military some folks called good stuff good juju and bad stuff bad juju. There is abso-postily-lutley no scientific basis for my assesment, it was done more along the lines of a WAG.

Once again sorry for misunderstanding

I always referred to a group of zombies as a mob. Which I think fits zombies as a mob is a disorderly crowd of people. Ok, so they're not technically people anymore but they're disorderly and in a crowd.

Thread Resurrection Warning

I recently used the term 'shamble' to refer to a group of zombies in a movie (not that it was necessary, I just wanted to impress people with my huge vocabulary -- they were not impressed, BTW).

Anyway, I was reminded of this thread, and though some of the newer members might have some ideas on this weighty topic.

I'd go with either horde or pack.

According to dictionary.com and wikipedia, the following terms would NOT work:

pack, horde, clan, squad, nest, tribe, hive, flock, school, or swarm

Each of these, and basically any already in use for the animal kingdom, have at their heart some kind of structure, heirarchy, teamwork, organization, leader, or control behind them.

I do not believe zombies work together at all, it just appears that way as they are all single minded and approach a situation the exact same way; such as all being drawn to the same noise, giving the illusion of working together.

For this reason, a new term would have to be adopted. One that is unique to them, such as the afformentioned "stagger" or a term that describes many individuals, but not working together such as "bunch".

The term I would propose though, would be a "concert" of zombies. They congregate in masses, and become single minded, yet not aligned. A zombie assault on a structure looks just like a mosh pit with all the flailing around.

Opinions appreciated.

I like "Stagger" for a group of slow movers.

Horde also works nicely, but that kind of implies large numbers doesn't it? I mean what if it's only, I dunno, three or four? That's a horde? A stagger of them sounds more fitting.

Or perhaps a "Lurch" of zombies.

A "Flesh" of Zombies?

A "Problem"?

A "Ward"?

"Squad" is the shit. We could all snicker every time somebody said it....morale booster.

Stagger definitely has a nice ring, if anything can be said to be "nice" about it. Hmm, a "Nice" of zombies.
A "Party"

Good god the possibilities are ENDLESS!

[Edit] A "Xonster" ?

Stagger

Postby Catgirl.Slim » Wed May 14, 2008 2:59 pm

A stagger could be a couple, like 7, then a horde could be like 7 staggers, and 7 hordes could be a Dread, it's a lot less counting than remembering 5's name, then 7's name, then 15's name, et cetera.

"I've got 3 Staggers on the left!"
"Yeah we'll I've got a horde and a half on the right!"
"Incoming, A mile out, we've got a dread on the way"

I like horde, but the idea of a "shamble" of zombies also appeals to me...

"About 20 on the left"
"60 more on the right"
"Large horde approaching!"

Really, why count in septimal system if everone is used to the decimal system?
