Zombie Squad Amateur Radio Club

Postby jamoni » Sun Mar 09, 2008 1:59 am

It is my pleasure to announce that ZS is forming it's own Amateur Radio Club. This club will be based at ZS HQ (under the authority of the Zombie Squad Board of Directors), but ZS HAM operators and enthusiasts worldwide will be welcome to join.

The focus of the club will be to get more people involved with emergency operations, of course, but we will add our own brand of fun as well. We plan on offering classes for different license levels, as well as testing for technician class licenses, so even if you aren't a licensed amateur, you can still join!

This club is in the early stages. We will be applying for ARRL affiliation, so there will be some requirements we need to meet for that. Right now we are gauging interest and signing up potential members. If you would be interested in joining this club, please PM me, but also feel free to post your ideas in this thread. Most ideas will be appreciated, a small minority will be mocked without mercy. :)

One of the events we would like to hold would be a ZS field day, where we all head for the hills and try to set up an emergency net. We would also like to hold a special event at Zcon, where we are planning a very comprehensive commo station on the mountain top. :)

So, if anyone is interested in what is tentatively being called the ZSARC, let me know!

Question - would it be necessary to be a ZS member in order to join?

Haven't really decided, but signs point to "Yes".

Would you feel better if we said "Dues for the ZSARC are $15/year, and include free membership to Zombie Squad" ?

Because, I mean, we're all about being flexible.

Oh, come on...

You can't expect us to give you free stuff that Jamoni is talking about offering to club members if you don't want to support the funding of the services we will provide for the club.

Nothing is stopping you from joining in on the airwaves with us since we don't own them. But, if $15 is that big of a deal you're going to be sadder about the price of the radio equipment. :)

The forum discussion information is free though!

Hey there we go ;) :P

I was only kidding around about the having to be a member anyway. I keep putting it off.

Need to have a ZSARC avatar tag or something ;)

ETA: Any way we could get our call sign on the membership card? ;)

Anyone who is hesitant about joining... I spent my $15 and immediately got my investment returned 100% in goodies, due to the generosity of a fellow ZSer. The "Members Only" section has a thread called "Pay It Forward". Free stuff FTW! (But you should eventually find something to give out.) End plug.

Jamoni, I am a General Class ham radio licensee. The ink is still wet on the paper. Count me in, as soon as I get a station going. This, combined with FRS and CB radio, will be an excellent resource for emergency communications. Not to mention, if we are up and talking all the time, it will be good practice to be familiar with your gear on an everyday basis, the finicky nature of radio propagation, and how to get comms through when you just have to.

The NW ZS chapter (that isn't officially yet in existence) is planning a 2-part camping trip. Two teams, the NWN and NWS groups, will simultaneously camp out 200 miles apart... and part of that weekend will be setting up portable emergency comms and attempt to reach each other over ham radio. Still got a lot of details to work out, but that's the gist of it. It would be cool to get some of that PSK31 encoding / decoding equipment going and have an over-the-air "chat room". I am thinking that it would be an excellent demonstration to non-hams in the group to make it feel non-threatening and familiar... so that we can rope more of them into ham radio, naturally.

Also excellent! Let us know when. Maybe we can put together a field station out here.

Yup. The future membership cards will probably have your call sign and your chapter affiliation. Probably not until next year though.

Here's a link to the ARRL's web page on starting a radio club:

http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/club/c ... 005/0919b/

If we want to, we can even get a club call sign. There's info on that and other aspects of starting an "official" club at the link.
