This thread is oozing with win, as predicted.

Just had a question: If you had a barrel type container, like a pot or keg, would it be better to have the stove upright with a flat surface on top, or horizontal?

It seems like a lot of these cylindrical stoves are horizontal. Is there a particular reason for doing it that way as opposed to upright? Pro and cons?

you know i thought of turning the pot on end wit the flat surface on top it would be better for cooking on but i was afraid that wit a top loaded stove that ther might be more of a chance of sparks escaping and damaging my tent since the tent material is light weight nylon..this way when the stove is on its side the sparks would hit the roof of the stove and be drafted on out the pipe rather than hitting an opening from being top loaded and going right on out of the stove and in the tent. BUT then again you might be on to something there!! mabe turn cylinder stove on end and cut the door in the side wall of cylinder and put pipe on top  that was a good question CAVE MAN

And farther away from the top.

The side of the Heineken keg has a really convoluted shape, it would be pretty hard to set anything on there and have it stay. I was planning on using it upright, with a well sealed side exit chimney near the top. My MSR titan kettle takes up a good amount of the flat side of the keg, so the only way to top mount a chimney and not have it be in the way would be to use a pretty narrow chimney.

heck you might even be able to get all your pieces to lay inside one another and put your little nuts/screws in a little bag, then youd only have to deal with one piece to pack up.

DAMNIT I DELETED MY PICS!!

ok here they are again

No worries, I understand what you were getting at. Great idea. I'll have to go back to Lowe's. I'll be buying some stove paint and gasket material.
Thanks for the idea.
DK
Edit: Now I see'em. Cool. Question: How would you seal the length of the seam?

DK as far as sealing the seam well...............on my stainless roll up pipe there is no seam to seal it is just overlapd enough to not have any gaps in it. so i think it would probbaly work the same way for your pipe, just overlap enough and not leave no gaps.

Camoedtj is right about the roll up pipe. Works great and packs down to nothing.

For smaller back packable stoves a horizontal shape seems like the best way to go. I am thinking it is the amount of coals exposed to the air flow that makes all the difference. In a smaller vertical stove there are fewer coals on the surface so more dead zones could develop. A cylinder shape seems to work better in relation to coaling as the wood slides down the round sides into the incoming draft. In a box stove the corners can develop dead zones. But than again there is the advantage of a larger flat cooking surface with a box shape.

I do have a cook pot that has been modified with a bend in the bottom to rest on the top of a round stove. I will post some photos in a few days.

here is a link for some stainless steel coil shim stock. i was going to try some of this, but since i really dont need another roll up pipe mabee somebody else who wnats to experiment with this idea, it would be way cheaper than you could buy from TITANIUM GOAT or others. i believe the thickness on my pipe is somewhere around like .004 but not sure on that since i dont have a micrometer.

Run across any other sources? Getting anything shipped over the border with UPS is like pounding a railroad spike through your scrotum.

Incidentally the tigoat titanium foil is .005", so .004 stainless ought to be at least as sturdy.

I was looking into some stainless steel bathroom sized trash containers. They already have a door assembly and are rust resistant.

DK.

I somehow feel that laying down would be best (horizontal) as opposed to vertical but without doing it myself I can’t be certain.

Since ya'll asked...

Basic "Quoting" by TGC.

Step 1. Find a nice post by someone else you would like to respond by "quoting" what they said.

Eg: TGC wrote something funny as usual and you want to respond to it.

Step 2. In the confines of that post you want to quote there is a Quote button. Press it and wait, do nothing else, don't copy and paste anything and don't press the Post Reply button at the bottom of the page..

Pressing that Quote button will bring up the post reply screen like you are used to using. However, you will notice that there is some text in the box already. It's the funny stuff that funny Aussie wrote. Awesome, but wait! Something's different right?

Yep, it's got
at the start of it...

cont from last post

...and
at the end of it.

Step 3. Now use your mouse to position your cursor at the very end of the text in your text input box (it should already be there but let's just make sure.

Step 4. Press the "Enter" button on your keyboard twice.

Step 5. Now type something like, "Damn TGC you are so much funnier than Czechnology. You rock! I want to send large amounts of top line gear and money in Australian currency or Gold Krugerands to you".

Step 6. Press the "Preview" button underneath the text input box. This will bring up a new screen with a preview of what your post-to-be will look like.

Step 6A. If you are unhappy with the way it looks scroll down until you get to the text input box and the "Preview" and "Submit" buttons. Make changes in the text input box. Press "Preview" again. If you are still unhappy with the way it looks repeat Step 6A.

Step 6B. If you are happy with the way it looks scroll down until you get to the text input box and the "Preview" and "Submit" buttons. Press "Submit".

w00t!

If you get a "DE_BUG" notification, don't panic. Press the "Back" button on your browser once and press the "Preview" button, then repeat Step 6B. It just meant you took a little too much time is all.
