Critique my FAK (With porn!) [Update!]

Postby Pastryfish » Thu Nov 15, 2007 8:35 pm

EDIT: The FAK in this post is my old FAK. Much of the contents are the same, but several things have changed, as well. Check further down in the thread for a link to my new one, or just go to the FAK showoff thread, my new one's on the first page.

It's all in a store-bought CLS bag that I had a pair of buckles to replace the single buckle sewn on, and ALICE webbing on the back to attatch it to my rucksack and my bug-out bag.

In the main pouch, there is:

2x large Kerlix rolls
2x smaller rolls of Kerlix
2x CATs
1x space blanket
4x tongue depressors
1x blister aid kit, with moleskin and butterfly bandages
A shitton of alcohol wipes
9x insect sting relief wipes
24x Ibuprofen tablets
1x roll of wide medical tape
1x roll of narrow medical tape
12x anti-diareheal(sp?) tablets
1x tube of neosporin
2x pairs of 'clean' rated latex gloves in their original packaging
6x non-aspirin painkiller tablets
4x individual packets of antibiotic ointment
4x individual packets of hydrocortizone cream
4x individual packets of insect repellent cream
2x individual packets of burn cream
4x individual packets of sunscreen
2x disposable CPR barriers
10x Q-tips
2x 2x2 gauze pads
3x 4x4 gauze pads
1x 5x9 gauze pad
18x butterfly closures
20x small bandaids
40x standard-size bandaids
1x pair trauma shears

In the first smaller pouch I have:

1x minor surgical kit, containing:
-1x scalpel /w 2 blades
-3x clamps
-1x needle probe
-1x tweezers
-2x sets of sutures
-1x penlight
1x old-style Army field dressing
3x crevats(sp?)
1x large Israeli bandage
1x 3x36" petrolatum gauze dressing

And in the second smaller pouch I have:

1x SAM splint
2x small Israeli bandages
1x 3.5oz QuickClot packet

Any ideas on any glaring deficiencies?

I have such a wide range of supplies, from treating bug bites to gunshot wounds, because this is the first aid kit I take with me everywhere - to training, to the field, to ranges (Both for work and for recreation), hiking, rucking, camping, hunting, in my car...Whatever.

Only things I can think of that I need to fix:

I need to put a few high-intensity chemlights in it, I need to get rid of the blister kit, and just keep a big peice of moleskin in it, and I need a snakebite kit.

It looks pretty good, although I didn't have time to go thoroughly over the whole list. One thing, though, that I like to apply to all of my FAKs if possible: When packing life-saving supplies like trauma dressings and Kerlix, make sure you can get to them quickly, easily, and without scattering half your bag to the wind. I call it insurance against that bastard Murphy.
I think a good gift for the President would be a chocolate revolver. And since he is so busy, you'd probably have to run up to him real quick and give it to him.

Yeah, I have one of the large Kerlix rolls and one of the CATs right on top of everything in the main pocket, the other one of each are on either side of the main pocket, and also easily accessible. The trauma shears are really in a little pouch on the side of the main pocket, and all the Israeli bandages and QuickClot are very easily accessible without digging.

Well, nevermind that, then. Carry on. :D

Did I miss gloves in there somewhere? If not get nitrile, not latex due to the growing incidence of latex allergies. Otherwise I got nothin'.

Got two pairs of pre-packaged 'clean' gloves...I say 'latex gloves', it's really that cloudy white plastic-y stuff.

Nitrile gloves and replace the 2 cpr-barriers with a single Pocket-Mask.

Also some ACE-bandages and a instant cold-pack would be nice, as well as some kind of burn-treatment like WaterJel

Looks like a nice FAK!

I like having pepto and Benadryl in my FAK...

I also added about 20 feet of gorilla tape wrapped around a business card to mine...

UPDATE:

Just got a Maxpedition Versipack to put my FAK in, since my CLS bag was really getting stuffed to the limit...It's pretty cool. There's a pocket that perfectly fits two CATs, and it's right on the top, it's got one big buckle instead of two small ones to fumble with, it's got more space, and the front pocket is perfectly suited for my 'minor shit and ointments' insert, while the main pocket fits perfectly all my heavier stuff, like the kirlex, Israeli bandages, and quickclot. And I even had room for an extra one of those huge rolls of Kirlex I had floating around, and still have room to spare. Also added a big card of duct tape.

Went to Walmart (Closest CVS I know of is a good drive away) and tried to find waterjel and snakebite kits, but couldn't find any. I guess I'll make a trip out to the pharmacy later this week...Got all those damned hippies in town for the School of the Americas protest this weekend, so I'm trying to stay on base.

Pics will come sometime tomorrow when my camera's battery is charged.

I just wonder what brand this is, I see that cross in almost every thread I read here in the First Aid forum. I have tried and search on google but I have not found anything, so what brand is it?

Yea, looks pretty good! I would just reiterate what some others have said:Nitrile gloves (it sounds like yours are latex)
Waterjel (or similar) burn treatment
More tape

Other than that, looks good!

Not meaning to cause any annoyance or irritation by reviving such a long-dead topic, but I finally got all at the same time time, camera, camera cables, motivation, camera and FAK in the same place, and internet access.

My FAK needed to be reorganized, and a few new things I'd gotten added in/some things restocked, and re-inventoried, so I took advantage of that and took some new porn of it, in the 'new' (not so new anymore..) bag.

The new list/FAK porn are located in the sticky thread here.

The things I've used it for, since my original post...

For a while, someway, somehow, our unit had either one or no medics for a good stretch, and whenever we went out to the field, I got picked to play medic, for a bunch of reasons (Even though I'm an MP, several of the team leaders in my squad, as well as my squad leader, knew I have a fetish for medical stuff, and that I have a very sizable and well-stocked FAK of my own, to complement the crappy CLS bags we had in garrison, which were really nothing more than a bunch of IVs and bandaids)...During this stretch, I treated minor cuts and scrapes, nothing major...Not even any heat casualties so I could give an IV :(

Not long after that I PCSed, and within my first week at my new duty station I was running up to my room to grab my FAK to treat an injury (Late in the day, the medic had already gone home)..An NCO had gotten a very large splinter shoved very deeply into his hand, and was unable to get it out picking at it with a knife and a gerber. I ended up whipping out a bunch of cool stuff (One of my scalpel blades went to this, as it was the only thing I was confident was sharp enough to cut down to the splinter), and ended up with him with the huge splinter (It was about 3/4" long, and about the thickness of a large sewing needle, shoved in deep/securely enough that just pulling at it wouldn't get it out) cut/pulled out, the wound cleaned, antibiotic ointment applied, and 2x2 taped over it (You know how band-aids suck for cuts on your palm).

It was fun as hell, and the most major injury my FAK has had to treat so far, even if it was just a splinter.

Looks very nice in that maxped-bag! You might want to add more kerlix and gloves though..

I came up with a different way of carrying gloves on my CLS bag. I bought two cordura nylon double glove pouches from the Raine company. I threaded those pouches onto the sling.

By keeping the gloves on the outside of the bag, I save space in the bag for more medical supplies. The other thing this does is it serves to remind me to "glove up" before getting my supplies.

Need more/better drugs

Postby USMZ » Wed Apr 30, 2008 8:34 pm

Ok, as a Nurse I would have to say you need more codine based drugs for serious pain control. which can be combined with your ibuprofen. Something with a paracentamol and codine (8 or 15 mg) combination would work fine - great for sprained ankles, broken bones, ect.
