New mini FAK for the range

Postby Makarov » Thu Aug 23, 2007 12:14 pm

I've been thinking about getting a FAK to use when on the range, and maybe to put directly on my rig. All the premade ones I've been looking at have been lacking essentials and had too big a pricetag to be interesting.
While at work today I was down at the local mall, and outside a photoshop I found a bin with outdated camera pouches for $8.
It hit me that this is what I've been looking for, so I bought one and one my way home from work dropped by a pharmacy to get some stuff.

Here's the pouch, kit inside and ready to go. Guess I need to add a red cross or something on it.

The big compartment. The loops for fastening 2 rolls of film is perfect for a fieddressing and a roll of gauze!

The small compartment. perfect for smaller bandaids +++

All the stuff, see list below.

I had some of this stuff lying around, this is marked *. Some I scrounged at work, that's marked ". The rest I bought at the pharmacy; A small-wound package(A suprisingly diverse package for the $$), a pack of sterile wound cleaning towels and a pack of medical strips.
Top left to bottom right:
10 pcs medium band aids
2 pcs bigger band aids
Medical strips
2 packets of Burnshield"
A CPR mask*
surgical blade*
cheap squeeze LED light*
2 pcs wound dressing with adhesive tape
2 pcs wound dressing without tape
4 pcs sterile wound cleaning towels
medical tape
1 small fielddressing"
1 roll of gauze"
1 pair of nitrile gloves*

I decided to not add meds, as I already EDC a small ziplock FAK which include my meds.

Complete FAK cost me $27,83. Out of that the medical strips were the most expensive costing me $6,5(I could have taken a pack from my main FAK but didn't want to). I also could have dropped buying the extra wound cleaning towels as the 'wound pack' had 2 already, that would have been another $4,8 off. The kits I've been looking at cost $33,5 and up.

This might seem expensive for you yanks, but the prices (and wages) are higher here in Norway than in the US. For a price comparison, a litre of 95 unleaded petrol costs approx $1,9 here in Norway at the moment, making it approx $7 a gallon. While we don't have a law for minimum wage here in Norway, an organisation has suggested it should be $15 an hour.

It's already stuffed to the brim, but if someone see anything essential missing please let me know and I'll look into making some changes.
