Recommendations for security light / camera combo

Post by zombieapocalypsegame » Tue Oct 06, 2015 12:34 pm

Hey all

I want to add 2+ more light/camera combos to our house. The area around our home is very dark on the sides which is nice but of course I'd like to secure those areas.

I'm looking for very cost effective light/camera combos that meet these requirements:
  • Solar powered - panel must be useful for other devices (wiring & voltage)
  • Battery must be enclosed in the unit* (see below)
  • Motion detector for light & camera
  • Light - no required lumens or wattage (60w standard household bulb would work very well in terms of illumination, LED equiv is fine, must obviously be outdoor/waterproof)
  • Ideally the bulbs are easily swappable as I am considering installing one 940nm infrared bulb
  • Camera - at least 720p with night vision including 940nm support
  • Wifi capable & secure
  • PC/app-accessible, email or ftp the images / video feed
One big thing is that this needs to be is easy to install, or at least is not something I have to jerry-rig together. For example, the battery cannot be separate / too DIY. I'm mounting this high up but directly on the exterior siding of the house - not on the eaves or roof so installation needs to be simple & straightforward.

And, since this is on a rental house, I need to be able to take it back down without a lot of difficulty.

I cannot give you a recommendation on solar powered lights. I gave up on solar versions after two real disappointments.

I do use these battery powered lights on BOL where there is no power handy.

Thanks for the suggestions Raptor.

Unfortunately, the two areas I want to light/secure are relatively low traffic areas, so I'll tend to forget about them which means they won't work when I need them to. To complicate matters where the lights would be mounted up high will make it even harder to replace batteries.

And, given the fact that I'm already detecting what I think are animals in our back yard raiding the bird feeder & trying to get in the trash cans, I want to have a camera there to see what's going on. That'll have to be after the fact, so the camera is mandatory too.

It sounds like you need a game camera not a solar powered security light.

I have several of these and they may work for what you want.

So we have a huge raccoon and big possum visiting our back yard at night. They are both very bold when the lights go out. But shy with them on. That said, last week there was a burglary turned attempted rape right down the street from here. I will need non game cameras that are more reliable along with bright lights.

I picked up a SunForce 80 LED motion sensing solar powered light.

It's installed on the side of the house, and set up. I still need to adjust it a bit, but it does an excellent job of lighting up the whole side yard.

We solved the raccoon / possum problem by bringing in the bird feeder every night. That's what they were both raiding.

That said, I still have one side of the house I need to illuminate better. We don't have much crime here, but I'd rather make myself the least attractive target possible anyway.
