My current project:
Take one 1992 Ford Bronco 4X4.
Replace gas 5.8 engine with diesel 6.9 engine.
Add fuel tanks on both sides of driveshaft for a total of three tanks with a capacity of +/-90 gallons.
Rigged for fording, all vents, intake and exhaust at roofline.
Heavy duty fabbed front and rear bumpers with rock guards for lights and mount for winch.
Power converter.
Search light.
Under hood welder.
These are just the rough specs, the details have yet to be 100% worked out. :D

Well......
The Bronco got replaced with a 94 Blazer, full size, 4X4, no rust, good interior and...

A 6.5 Turbo Diesel! :D

I have almost finished going through the Blazer and bringing it up to snuff.
I am starting on the mods. So far:
Raised it up a couple inches and did some clearencing for new wheels and tires.
Bought a set of 16X8 Centerline Wildcat wheels with 305/70-16 Wrangler AT.
Put on a mandrel bent 3" exhaust from the turbo out.
Got rid of factory intake and installed a K&N filter and half plumbed the snorkel(up to hood, trying to decide if I should make the hood to roofline part or buy one.)
May have found my new bumpers/winch mount.

My wife drives a 1600cc corolla, I drive a Mitz FTO 200hp 2 door sports car,
NOT good for any PAW situation therefore I've decided to get realistic in my preperations. (stop dreaming and start scheming)

Within the next 12-18 months I'm going to buy a 1997-1998 Nissan Pathfinder 3.2 deisel 4 door 4x4 $8 grand US over here in NZ, good for 30mpg as I will use it for work each day 320 miles per week.

Its not the best bush bashing SUV but very good to use as a every vehical and good enough for a BOV when the time arises.( far better than what I drive at the moment).
Deisel is good to store and with additives should be ok for 6-8 years, in a PAW world deisel should be easy to get from abandoned trucks, service stations, farms, fleet truck sales etc not like petrol.

This is my realistic plan which I can achieve to be prepared for the future world.

1990 Ford Bronco w/ stock lift to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Wearing Michelin LT32X11.5 LTX AT. There is a heavy bumper on the front made from 6" C channel and some cold rolled tubing. The rest of it is pretty stock but can be modified with little time investment.

not the best vehicle but its the one that is reliable and very repairable

I need a generator to be able to weld on push bars and stuff if TSHTF
on the plus side I can change the ride height in about three hours, good mileage, sorta fast.
I should probably fab up the zombie plow and engine cage while PG&E is up and running

My original plan was to use a souped up 22-r motor, tons of aftermarket stuff
available and used parts are plentiful. But then I got familiar with the ways of the aircooled and my tune changed.I like the advantages of this car too much to change it much more than I already have.

If I win the lottery tho I'm building the FE-RWD bug

Nissan Frontier

Postby Leatherman » Thu Jan 04, 2007 11:31 pm

I just purchased a 2006 Black four door Nissan Frontier Nismo package, it's a great truck. It's one of the best off road trucks, and it can haul and tow plenty, and has plenty of room inside. Also the passenger seat folds down so if I want to sleep I can sit in the back seat with my legs up. Plenty of room and capable of going off road, plenty of power, all the stuff I need, 4x4 with rear locking differential it's what I'd use in a heart bear.

In the short term, any of the 4x4's listed would be great.

5 years into a PAW, for everyday use, I'd expect to be using a mountain bike--if I've lived that long, it probably means 1) there aren't TOO many zachs around, 2) fuel will be hard to find, 3) I've settled in an area for the long-term, maybe I would still have an auto, but I sure wouldn't want to use it for anything but escaping.

I drive, and would use, a 2004 F250 superduty. It has the FX4 package with 4x4, etc. It's a diesel, so it will last me much longer than a gas engine car, with me driving ~1000 miles a week. No mods yet, but I'm looking into replacing the stock 29 gallon tank with a 46 gallon tank from www.transferflow.com . Since I'll be putting a tonneau cover on it soon, I'll probably add a 50 gallon in-bed auxillary tank as well. So I'll be good for a long way in case of a ZPAW, and I can make the drive from Texas to Louisiana without stopping for gas too :)

How about?

This is pretty neat, if limited to street use only. Might make a good mobile command base (if it was ever made) for Zombie cleanup.

Talk about going places.

http://www.cartype.com/page.cfm?id=108&alph=ALL&dec=ALL
This would be neat as well.
Of course, again, the problem with concept vehicles is that they so rarely get made and put into production.

These are possible (again if made), but my realistic choice is my 2006 Jeep Wrangler (#2). Add in a small trailer for hauling gear, and I feel good to go.

I do have to ask, has anyone thought about Farm equipment? You average tractor doesn’t get great mpg, but it can go a lot of places, tow stuff most vehicles would balk at, and in many cases go over lots of things. Parts could be easy or hard to find, depending on where you go. Not great on speed, but you could certainly run over any zombies in you path. For that matter, hook up some of the wicked farm implements and turn those zombies to shredded meat.

Some of the sprayer tractors would be neat as weapon platforms as well.
Just trying to go in a new direction via thought process. Feel free to point out the good and bad. :>)

Here's my current daily driver...

2002 Jeep Wrangler, 4 cylinder (good on gas with plenty of low end torque).

I'd planned on doing some more upgrades this summer (a 2" lift, 31-32" tires, rocker skids, winch) but I just bought a Harley - so I've got to lay low and fly under the radar or the Mrs. will eviscerate me!) :D

4 Cylinder is nice, but you can't beat the torque put out by Jeep's old I-6. Damn them for discontinuing it.

Motorcycle with sidecar

Postby El_Cid » Mon May 14, 2007 7:08 am

Heres my choice. Has offroad capabilities, though semi-slow (stop speed of 65mph). It gets great gas mileage and has a machine gun.
