Reputable places to order from?

Post by Big Boy » Tue Apr 08, 2014 8:18 pm

I have been into the whole idea of preparedness for a while.

I've admittedly been into firearms more than anything. I'm a gun guy, love shooting guns, building them, ammo variances. They've always been a fun hobby for me. But, I find myself bored with them in a way, as far as new information to learn. Even though I carry, I am realizing that practically, most of the preps discussed here, would more likely have a chance to need to be used than a firearm. (not to say I won't continue to carry)

I go after hobbies hard, I research, read, learn about my interests literally every day. Forums are as fun for me as TV.

The problem is now that I am trying to actually take the idea of preparedness and start to have a physical grasp on it... I honestly don't know where to order from. Or even where to look.

I have ordered from LA police gear several times and trust them, but they aren't necessarily oriented to the products I'm now trying to obtain.

Places like Bass Pro generally sell cheap garbage for a huge price. So now I'm actually at the point of purchase for products I've put the research into (a lot of thanks to this forum) and now I have no idea where to buy them from.

**I did do searches, and while they provided valuable information, I didn't find many sources of purchase**

BB,
We had a thread on reputable vendors that was popular for a while but died. Here's a link http://www.zombiehunters.org/forum/view ... t=48&hilit
It is pretty outdated, I gave a recommendation for a joint called Desert Deuce that went down the tubes and took some members money with them.

For freeze-dried food, I use Safecastle http://www.safecastle.com/ for large amounts (cases of #10 cans). For single #10 cans I sometimes use http://www.nitro-pak.com/. Each company has a couple of sales per year, and both companies do the maximum Oregon Freeze Dried (Makers of Mountain House brand) lets them do. Safecastle also carries the canned butter and cheeses made originally for folks in Australia, butter is Dutch, I don't remember where the cheese is from but it is like Cheddar and American put together. Knives I usually get from http://www.agrussell.com/ from their weekly specials. Batteries I get from http://www.batteryjunction.com/. I get a lot of stuff from Amazon also. I buy case-lots of ammo from http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/index.php, but got mine before the big rushes happened. Lucked out and bought 1000 rounds of 308 from Cabelas the Sunday before the school shooting for 20 cents a round. I have never had a problem with any of these folks. YMMV.

Edit to add: Wise foods are not that good for the money IMHO. Stroganoff tasted so bad I had to toss it, in Iraq, with the alternative of hard-boiled eggs for supper.

It would help if we had an idea of what you were looking for, and what you do/don't have locally.

I buy 50% of my dry goods from the LDS cannery that is 30 miles away. A friend is a member of the church, so I can get access. The money saved on shipping is immense. I don't see a point in the 5 gallon buckets or cases of MRE's. I eat what I prep in a rotational system, and #10 cans have allowed me to create that system.

The rest of my food storage preps are usually bought when items are on sale and I get $5 off $25 or $10 off $50 coupons from the local grocery store. I use that coupon with the store card and Sunday paper coupons. Probably twice a year I get a combo where all three hit at the same time, and I get 50% off retail and end up with 70+ pounds of assorted dry goods for $30. I also do a ton of "discount" store shopping. Aldi's, Save More, Dollar General, etc. I almost always buy store brand options if available as they are cheaper and taste almost the same.

I like REI gear....complete with 20% off coupon when you join.

I'm not to food and water yet. That's next.

I guess I just am looking for the online walkmart of ZS, lol.

I have nothing local.

I am unaware of what brands are good and what are trash in some areas.

I'm trying to round out my bag.

I still need a pot, or cookware. Compass, water filtration. Molle first aid kit, ect.

I'm finding the things I need, they're just all at different web sites. I'd rather find them on one and pay one shipping fee.

It's an "upgraded" Amazon account...gives you free 2 day shipping on anything sold by or fulfilled by Amazon with included Sat delivery (or 3.99 per item for next day delivery), access to Amazon's version of Netflix/Hulu (which actually has a bigger library than either of those), a bunch of monthly deals on free Kindle books and apps, some free cloud storage space, etc. It's going up this year in price, from $80 a year to $99 a year, but if you order a lot from Amazon (or you stream a lot of Netflix/Hulu) it works out to be a good deal. When I signed up for it 4 years ago, my first order (a 7.1 surround sound setup) would've cost me over $230 to ship standard 5-7 days...thanks to Prime, I got it with free 2-day shipping. That alone means it's paid for itself for almost 3 years, not including all of the other stuff I order from there.

Like Wraith said, it gives you free shipping, the video library and discounts on products. I do 90% of my shopping online these days. It is simply easier, much more convenient, and 99% of the time, it is cheaper. Factor in the time spent calling around pricing, and the gas burned getting there, and it more than makes up for the cost.

For the diversity of products, free shipping, and customer service amazon is hard to beat.

I would be shocked if you find everything in one place. If you do, please share it with us. I really don't think you will find somewhere that has everything you want at the price you want. Amazon will be your best bet for a one stop as they aggregate vendors and the prime membership can save you a ton on shipping.

For some ideas on the items you are looking for. Some threads have links, others do not. Also use the search function to help you find what you are looking for. Search MBO and you will get tons of threads with first hand accounts of using gear in the Mock Bug Out.

Ditto what previous folks have said about Amazon Prime - that's generally my first stop when I am looking to buy something online.

Other places I frequent:
uscav.com - (when they send a coupon for free shipping or a good percentage off)
theepicenter.com - site is a little clunky, but good prices on individual MRE items
m4040.com - minimum $40 order, but free shipping

Maybe this is obvious, but I think it's less (not) important where you order from and more important what/which brand you're ordering. Of course, customer service does factor in if the order's wrong or broken or something, but 90% (95? 99?) of the time as long as you receive it, not much else matters, yea?

Do the leg-work to find out which product you want (which it sounds like you're doing), and then do the leg-work to find which site is selling it for the best price (which it sounds like you're having problems with). One place isn't always gonna have the best deal for even most of what you want. And I guess that's kind of what you're doing here with this post (getting together a list of "leads"?), but you should approach the purchasing with the same interest as you have the gear selection. Start googling :)

I don't think there's any quick fix, even just for 1 very specific type of gear. I've gotten my camping/hunting/BOB gear everywhere from steapandcheap/backcountry.com to campmor to amazon to Midway to Cabela's to Craigslist to local shops and more. I usually always start with Craigslist if it's something that I'm okay with getting second hand. Also, keep in mind Christmas and birthdays if you have this type of family/friends - I use to hate coming up with lists of crap (my wife's family loves to have a list of exactly what I want them to get for me), but then I realized I could knock out little or even big chunks of prepping gear year by year with Holidays.

The website might look outdated, but I bought from them a couple of times. Not always the best price, but great selection and good service.

Also, for smaller EDC stuff, CountyComm has some interesting products: http://countycomm.com/whatsnew.html

I order a bit of stuff from The Sportsmans Guide
http://shop.sportsmansguide.com
and just recently someone on ZS mentioned KeepShooting.com
http://www.keepshooting.com/military-surplus
They both have good deals on military surplus and ammo.

Sierra Trading Post, Campmor, SunnySports, CampSaver, Bighorn, Walmart. All have their place. As mentioned before. Find the product first, then find the lowest price.

Check out Jamie Shortt's gear lists. He has an 18 pound skin out kit that only cost $350 plus he tells you what he bought, where he bought it and what he paid for it. http://www.lytw8.com/Gear_Lists.html

I may blow some peoples minds here, but do you know Walmart's Online store sells a boatload of gun accessories, knives, gear and prepper stuff that you will not see in their stores. I think they made deal with other online gear providers because sometimes the stuff is sold thru walmart but has another name with it.

They sell;
Gear from 5.11, Blackhawk, Maxpedition and condor

Gun holster and accessories from Crimson Trace, Blackhawk, Streamlight, ATI, Desantis, Hogue, Uncle Mikes and others.

Knives from Spyderco, Benchmade, Ontario, Kabar, Cold Steel and others

Flashlights from Fenix, Streamlight, Surefire

Food Stuff from Mountain House and Augason Farms, including buying in bulk.

The best part is some stuff you can "ship to store" to save on shipping. Also you can use Walmart gift cards, so you can buy gift cards with cash to buy something online and not use a credit card.

As for online retailers, I don't think anyone has mentioned http://www.majorsurplus.com/
Some of the stuff they sell is cheap junk, but if you look around they also have some good deals on good stuff.

I primarily use eBay. I've become quite adept at scrutinizing sellers and their wares to ensure that I get what I'm buying. I've gotten snow peak titanium cookware, an ILBE, goretex rain gear, the USMC MSS and many other things at good prices.
