Re: Homebrew Trangia stove kit PIC HEAVY. Dialup No Bueno!!!
Old thread here, but is that varga stand still going strong? I have an almost identical setup with hardware cloth, and its very functional but kind of funky. I dont like funky. Built in windscreen of the varga looks like a winner, plus flat folding. My alternate when its not bone dry is a paint can stick stove. Doesnt get any simpler. Trangia is bombproof though, would be good to eliminate the funky part of my setup!

re: The Trangia.
I found these when looking for a bit of kit the other day.
Trivets

and this interesting stand/windscreen combo.

My daughter is out of state and managed to score for me a SIGG Tourist/Trangia Stormcooker knockoff for under 40 USD. Can't wait to get it fired up.

Yeah, my cargo stand is holding up fine. It's not the "best", but what is? I have found it holds my 12" cast iron frypan just fine as long as I'm gentle, and clipping it together with a large paper clip is very good when you need it. In windy conditions, I still use the old REI foil wind break as well.

Thanks for reply, i'll check it out for a trip coming up. "Best" is a cast iron pan about 500 degrees in a clay oven with a ribeye for two minutes each side max! But if i knew how to get that in a 20lb pack i'd tell you guys first i promise.Dawgboy wrote:Yeah, my cargo stand is holding up fine. It's not the "best", but what is?

That "interesting stand/windscreen combo" is a Clikstand with some extra wire over the pot stand part.TacAir wrote:re: The Trangia.

Those click stands are very nice, I handled one recently and it's good quality.

Last piece you dont have:
http://www.amazon.com/Trangia-327589-Mi ... d_sim_sg_3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
We just did the same alc burner upgrade for our solo stoves. Those are awesome burners and the gasket lid sealed the deal for us.
Traded this one off.
http://www.amazon.com/Vargo-Titanium-Tr ... ohol+stove" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Fell in love with the looks weight and size. Until I tried to use it. seems like mice farting in the bushes will blow it out

Re: Homebrew Trangia stove kit PIC HEAVY. Dialup No Bueno!!!
The click stand is a great trangia burner based option. It comes closest to imitating the trangia airflow action provided you buy a set that comes with the windcreen. (Like the one pictured.) You additionally lose a lot of the bulk associated with the trangia systems. As far as the added wire to allow the use of a narrow pot, remember that the flame will spread out around the pot. Trangia burners will tend to work more efficiently with squatter pots. Trangia makes several pots that would work well with this system as does Gsi.
All the best!

The windscreen in the setup really - well, blows.
I've had this cheapie folding windscreen since forever - used with my Svea 123, now used with the Trangia. Alcohol stoves have a lot of positive properties, but are quite sensitive to the breeze.

Yeah as you say the mini trangia sucks. I was referring to the 25 and 27 series systems.
The mini trangia is good for indoor use in my opinion, not much else... Certainly not for use under challenging conditions.

Re: Homebrew Trangia stove kit PIC HEAVY. Dialup No Bueno!!!
I've tested out the Trangia Mini as it is sold, and was not impressed either.
With some windshielding mods it can be workable. I just got one of those penny pop can stoves to test out in a side-by-side with the Trangia burner unit which should be interesting.
The Vargo windshield looks sweet!

Re: Homebrew Trangia stove kit PIC HEAVY. Dialup No Bueno!!!
Had my daughter pick up one of these while she was Outside.

At first I thought it was a knock-off off of a Trangia - it isn't. It's a knock-off of a Swedish Ranger cookset.
Compared to the Swedish military cookset and a Trangia.

I boiled 2 cups of water faster in the larger kit than the Trangia 28T. It weighs a bit more, but I can drop the separate windscreen and the hassles that go with that. The setup is far more stable than the Trangia mini as well. It weighs a metric crapton less than the Swedish military cookset....
Huh?
Oh, It was had at Billings (MT) Army navy. It was made in China for import to OZ. Sold in Montana and now is in use in Alaska - global economy for sure....

Re: Homebrew Trangia stove kit PIC HEAVY. Dialup No Bueno!!!
Am I the only one who packs socks and other clothes in my cook set when I can't fit other gear? A lot of my gear won't fit inside of my kettle but a couple pairs of socks will for sure. I'm surprised more people don't do it.
Tell me I can't do it and watch as I prove you wrong.
Re: Homebrew Trangia stove kit PIC HEAVY. Dialup No Bueno!!!
My cook sets are full of the stoves that go with them, pot grabbers, and bandanas.

I always have several rags in my cookset to use as anti-rattle/potholder/spill cleaner.
