Primal/tactical quasi-Celtic short sword

Post by Storm Crow » Sat Mar 02, 2013 1:13 am

This was an experiement. I've been wanting to make a double-edged blade inspired by Celtic La Tene swords for a while (whether that is evident in the final product or not). I had a customer approach me about a sword blade, so I forged this out as a test piece to see how I would do forging a double-edged blade. I think I see some Chinese influence as well, but it's mostly my style turned toward doing a double-edged short sword. Seeing how this one turned out, I can now see about forging a longer blade.

Image

The overall length is 19 3/4" and the blade, including the choils, is 13 1/5". The steel is 5160 and the handle is toxic green and black paracord impregnated with Minwax Wood Hardener, with a three-strand Turk's head knot. Both edges shave hair.

Image

The sheath is Kydex with two MOLLE locks.

Stormcrow, could you shoot me a quote for this ones near twin. Maybe a touch longer blade say an inch or so.
Except for the handle makes me think of a gladius or xyphos which is exactly what I have wanted for a very long time. Well done.

That certainly makes me smile.

It looks a lot like a Roman gladius to me which I like very much! Another sweet piece of work!

Thank y'all!

Any Roman influence is unintentional. :)

The next one is going to be even more interesting. You see, it's a collaboration... :D

Reminds me of a scaled down Viking sword. Also makes me want one, bad. Nice work!

I can see the Celtic/Gallic influence in the handle, but the sword looks just pure roman.

To me the blade looks Celtic, but the handle looks Japanese. The reason why it probably looks Roman to most people is because as far as short swords go the Gladius is what most have seen in movies. It was the most popular double edged short sword of its time, so it's what people immediately compare it to.

I'm guessing that the reason the handle looks Japanese to me is because of the wrap with the diamond pattern with light contrasting with dark. Usually the Celts used leather, wood or metal for the handle.

Still a good looking short sword.

Prepping; Why prep? Well just think of it as a physical form of insurance. You insure your home "just in case" it gets robbed. Why not prep "just in case" the poop hits the propeller?
