Swedish Mess Kit w/ Trangia Stove?

Postby Boosted98gsx » Sat Feb 11, 2012 1:47 pm

Anyone own one of these delightful devices? I just picked one up off ebay (stainless version) for my BoB.

Pretty popular - search with
"mess kit" than search those results with "swedish"
You'll get elevenly dozen threads with photos.

Got got a dozen of the SS when they were selling for like 6 USD with the kit, burner, folding cup, wind screen and fuel bottle. Now, the stainless is harder to find and priced to pretty silly levels.

Gave one to all the kids, and hopefully, if and when the G-kids get into scouting - equip the little guys.

What happened is that the surplus supply dried up just as the demand in the prep/bushcraft community took off. I too got several of them 4 or 5 years ago. SG had them... 4 for $20 + 4 extra burners, bottles and windscreens. I picked up a couple sets, some are the aluminum and some are the stainless. Its a good kit, very robust. It's not lightweight at all, typical of military surplus gear. One great thing about it is it is designed to be used either with a fire or the alcohol burner.

Crypto's thread is the definitive ZS work on the subject.

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=23138&hilit=swedish+mess+kit

I recommend adding a stock Trangia simmer ring to add to the cooking versatility.

These things are appreciating better than my 401k.

Don't beat yourself up - it's all about where in the curve you are able to buy. Before you buy surplus, always check what commercial & new costs, then decide how badly you want that heavy duty surplus whatever....

I got a bunch of M44s, with matching S/N for 80 USD each.
Now, IF you can find them folks are asking between 250 and 300 USD. Just crazy.

I bought a couple of the staiinless ones about five years ago for $7 each. Now they go for up to 65 each. I would not pay that. For that price you can get really nice commercial gear. They are heavy but tough, I use them for my truck kit.
The ones I got were supposed to be "like new", but the were brand new still in the wax paper.

Someone told me they sold a used one for $35 but I thought he was kidding me. Till I saw your link, daaaaamn!

LOL holy shit they're $65 now? Hahaha, thats awesome!

I'm down to one kit left, Ive given the others away to friends. The last one went to Braxton a month ago.

I myself have come full circle: I went from using my Swedish mess kit, to buying a few commercial stoves and messkits, then finally getting sick of using pressurized stoves and all the extra shit you need to make one run efficiently as well as the bulk of having a stove and a messkit, and now use a Trangia civilian anodized messkit (Series 27-6 UL), with a beloved brass spirit burner at its heart.

For 26 USD it would be a hard call. Still less than a GSI kit. About the same as the mini Exbit kit.

I was happy to get the heavy stainless with the funky cup.

Then there was the Bund utensil kits....heavy stainless, all go into a holder - 6 for 5 USD IIRC.

The web market had a ton eurosurplus - I suspect that a metric crapton of US surplus will be hitting the market in the next year.

I was recently inspired to assemble a Dave Canterbury type bedroll bushcraft kit. In his economy kit he picked up a stainless dog bowl for a couple of bucks to use as a boiling vessel. I considered doing this, but then thought that the stainless pot set that was already in my basement would be perfect. I left the windscreen and burner behind. (it's a minimalist kit) The shape rolls up great and it creates a bombproof storage compartment. Used this way it'll maximize the "over fire" features of the kit.

It weighs a bit more, but had you considered a small cast iron wok? I check out GROJ sales all the time in the summer. I also have a larger hammered carbon steel wok for camp cooking. Small fire, big cooking.

Thanks for the link, I'll have to check this guy out a bit more.

Less about the Swedish kit (as we have some pretty definitive threads on here about that) and more about surplus finds and the market - you never know but if your finger is on the pulse of the bushcraft/survival community you can kind of guess what will dry up and be hot next. 100% Italian wool blankets for example? Was $20 a few years ago. Sportsman's Guide is usually a good source. I peruse the surplus section weekly. You gotta be fast though - I missed out on the bashas last year.

Look for a bunch of bushcrafters talking about projects regarding something, find it, and buy in bulk.

Yeah I have a tip... Those Swedish civil defense parkas are a lot of winter coat for $25. I grabbed several of them. I picked up a surplus Italian army duffle and packed two of them along with a wool blanket inside along with some german military winter hats. It makes a great "winter module" to supplement the three season kit in the car.

http://shop.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/ ... x?a=759179

If you can live with the non tacticool powder blue color the parkas are a fantastic value.

If you need green there's this one... Basically the exact same thing but in green. They say od but it's more of a hunter green.

http://shop.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/ ... px?a=59123

I picked up one of these as well...

http://shop.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/ ... x?a=385950

My wife has appropriated it since the zipper on her last made in china coats zipper broke. It's huge and very long on her. This is the second winter that she's had it and I don't foresee getting it back...

I'm going to start a separate thread do this doesn't go too far off topic...

Well my mess kit showed up today.

Aren't the swedish ones supposed to have the three crowns all over it? Only thing that has crowns is the Trangia stove....

I went down the hole and rooted around in the surplus bins...
Mine have it on the windscreen and the burners.

Most of my burners are marked Svea and a couple are marked Trangia.

Maybe the Svea ones put the logo on the windscreen?

Be sure and check out you tube vids of the kit.
Some folk call them Swiss mess kits.
One guy will show you the "correct" way to use it, along with a handle trick for pouring.
Another guy does baking and deep frying with his.
On another site a guy shows wind screen upside down over burner, to use a round coffee pot.

I'm still sad that I never got one when they were widely available. I tried to order one from Sportsman's Guide, but they went out of stock, and then I found another source and the website let me order, but it eventually got cancelled with an e-mail saying they were out of stock and couldn't be back ordered.

They seem like great kits, but I can't afford $65 for one on eBay. I don't think they are a deal at that price.

Last I was at our local surplus outlet, they had several (907 surplus) maybe they can make a deal with you for less.

Since those are used kits, I am willing to bed that the o-ring on the burner cap will be kinda ragged out from a decade of dudes putting the flame out on a hot stove. I'll have to pull an o-ring out of my kit to find the size for you guys to order a replacement if you need it.

Places that stock hydraulic repair parts should have the proper o rings. If the o ring is messed up there's a good chance the jets are gooed up too. You can use a pin to ream them out a bit. If that doesn't work you can always just grab a consumer trangia burner as a replacement.
