Sonim cell phones

Postby max v » Sun Apr 29, 2012 4:18 pm

Hey guys, so I've been looking into rugged phones lately and came across the sonim xp3300, what is now officially being called the toughest phone in the world. Anyone out there who can attest to this?

Some may find her a bit plump, but to me any form that follows function is sexy as hell (if hell were sexy).

I'll turn this page into a review once I get some hands-on time.

Hey guys, so here's the preliminary review of my new Sonim xp3300. I've been putting it through its paces over the past few days. So far I gotta say it performs flawlessly. Its been blasting music through its speaker for hours on end, anything from Marvin Gaye to the local dj mixing it up with some old skool jungle records. Reception is exemplar, even in my reinforced concrete cocoon, but the sound's a bit muffled on lower volume settings. This could be due to the goretex membrane that covers the 100db speaker, effectively making it waterproof. The same was done to the omnidirectional microphone, which supposedly sounds as if you were mumbling, though all the people I've talked to over the phone said they heard my voice very clearly, as if I were standing beside them, and that's a literal quote. I should mention that the calls were local and that we have more cell towers here than a... err developed country, so take it for what it's worth.

I haven't activated the data connection yet so can't comment on any of the online features or the GPS. Safe to say that specwise this is no match for a fully loaded iphone 4G, as the xp3300 is only 2G (though a 3G capable model is now on offer in the form of the xp5300), but I have yet to find a video on youtube where a guy runs over his iphone in a truck and then makes a call with it. And that's exactly what people have been doing to their sonims. So I don't have to, which is nice. Another thing I won't do much with this phone is text, because it's pretty akward and even after some practice I'm not convinced. For some reason it keeps putting blank spaces between letters, which need to be deleted every time, so if you're always in a rush and rely on texting this is definately not the phone for you. On the other hand, if you need a reliable phone to cope with all the abuse and neglect, and have 4900 free texts left at the end of the month, then look no further.
So to sum up: it's a waterproof* phone, gps, radio, voice recorder, camera, mediaplayer and flashlight that can take abuse and will standby for up to a month.

Finally I would like to point out that I am in no way affiliated with Sonim Technologies and paid €258 plus shipping for my xp3300, which was a bargain really considering they're listed as high as €475 plus shipping. So this baby will be nurtured and not tossed around the bar for shits and giggles, wanna make sure I can count on it when it really matters. That said, Sonim stands by a comprehensive 3-year warranty, where if the phone dies they replace it no questions asked. And that coupled with the flashlight function (simple yet brilliant) convinced me to jump on the Sonim bandwagon. Sorry, no airco.

* I realize there's no such thing strictly speaking

After using the Sonim xp3300 for a couple months now, I have to say so far so good.

The phone gets subjected to water, dust, direct sunlight and heavy vibrations on a daily basis for hours on end and it doesn't seem to be bothered by any of it, the only thing I've noticed is that one of the buttons is a bit looser than it used to be.

Battery life is more then sufficient for my needs, in 8 weeks of intensive use it's been fully charged and drained 7 times.

The data connection is 2G which I guess is pretty slow if you're used to iphones, but to a smartphone novice it should be adequate for occasionally checking sports results and what not.

If you want a dedicated GPS platform you could look at the xp5500 which is 3G, even though you still only have a fairly small screen compared to other manufacturers so not really an option when you're in the car for example.

The xp3300 is rated at 100db, which is great if you need to listen to instructions over a noisy background.

The text function is still awkward but in all honesty it can be programmed, I'm just not very good at it.

The camera is a bit subpar at 2 megapixel but functions perfectly and has a flash(light) and digital zoom. Images can be stored on a micro-SD card (16gb max).

And my favorite, the calendar function. Finally, no more missed birthdays.

That's about all I can think of right now. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to shoot.

I might be willing to drop my otterboxed iPhone from that high. It's survived falling off my bike at 50 MPH.

I have been using the Sonim XPS3400 for two months now. I am on my second one.
The speaker quit working on the first one. Took it back to my service provider and they gave me a brand new one.

It is clunky, but I have dropped it on concrete while on top of a 6' ladder and it even got submerged in 8" of 180 degree water that flooded a mechanical room when a steam pop-off valve failed. (All on the second phone)

Don't you remember? The cell phones in SBTB were the old style bag phones/car phones with the curly cord on the handset!

I've been beating on my Tundras for a few years now. I standardized these with my wife after we kept breaking Razors(the most frangible phone I've ever seen). She got herself a smartphone(and is on her third one in less than a year), so I have a spare now.
