The writers of the show seemed to be confused on whether they are writing for Dallas or a SHTF zombie show.

That's what happens when you fire the director mid-production.

"Walking Dead" Cable Series

Another problem I think is that they had different writers for different episodes. Clearly they weren't on the same page.

Yep, and that's one of the reasons they canned Darabont. He would not budge on artistic & story choices that AMC found "too expensive" etc. Once they canned him, they brought in a more puppet-like director who would cave to their demands for budget reduction, etc. (one of which was "we need to shoot 50% or more indoors.")

They also shelved Darabont because he spent a shit-ton of money, and shut down several streets in downtown Atlanta for several days, to film a massive scene where Rick's group go back and find that the Vato's compound had been overrun by the walkers. And Rick and the gang have a long pitched battle in the streets with the zombie hoard while making their escape. But something or someone screwed-up, and most of the footage was unusable.

Brilliant of you to feature the spelling "programme" in your inquiry about TWD on overseas tellie! Splendid good show, being so organised so as to appreciate other theatres of operation.

I find it a little strange that I am actually excited to see the first episode in B&W.
