Mora Robust review.

Postby Woods Walker » Thu Jun 28, 2012 11:28 pm

Here is a short review of the new Mora Robust knife. I picked this up for 15 dollars plus 3 for shipping. Unlike most Mora knives the blade is .125 or 1/8 inch thick. Handle is larger than the Clipper/Companion/High/Top Q knives. For me the larger handle is welcome however never felt the Clipper was uncomfortable. The knife’s blade is around 4-inches in length. The tang is the same as the newer Companions or Top/High Q knives. The newer tang goes deeper into the handle but is thinner if memory is correct. Never did have a problem with the Clipper’s tang but guessing the newer one is better.

Here is a short video.

The steel is 1095 and if treated right I really like it. Nothing fancy, just a good steel that gets the job done. Mora changed the inlay to a gold like lettering.

Image

The handle feels like a champ in my larger hands.

Image

As stated the spine is thicker than the typical Mora.

Image

Lets compare the blade thickness of the following Mora knives. From left to right. The High Q is .079, #2 is .098 and Robust is .125. All of these knives are winners in my book. The conventional wisdom states the thinner scandi should cut easier. They all seemed to cut through wood very well. Time will tell if I find a preference in this regard. I do think the thicker knife would be better for heavier work like batoning but have done this with the thinner Mora blades as well.

Image

Just messing around to see how it cuts.

Image

Conclusion.

So far I like this knife. For the money like most every Mora I own it’s a good value. Over time I gravitate to just a few knives for actual use and this determines what is liked more so than initial impressions. For now being the newest kid on the block it has my attention.

Thanks for looking.

Update.

Here is an update after more field use.

I recently picked up one of these, as well as a mora companion. Between the two, the robust is the winner in my book. It fills my hand better, and I do like my knives just a tad thicker than the standard mora blades.

Nice little bit of insight. I have one on my wish list/short "to buy" list. I have a lot of love for Moras.

I knew you'd get one.

It's on my shortlist to pick up soon - I love my companion, but a little extra girth and a larger handle (that's not difficult to see in the dark all bloodied up) will be greatly enjoyed.

Mora knives make me :awesome: .

I'm in desperate need for a good, cheap, fixed blade for my camping gear and this looks like it might fit the bill. Thanks for the write up.

Took the Companion out of my wishlist and put a shiny new Robust in there. I'll likely do a review around Christmas when I hit Florida for good, since I know we'll have plenty of deadfall to work with. Thanks for the review.

Mora knives are probably the best knives you can get for the money. I have a couple and they have always performed as well or better then a more expensive blades I own.

I have not tried the Robust yet, bet I will based on this review and a couple of others I have read recently.

THANK YOU!

I've been peeking at mora knives for a week now, but didn't know if I could get a solid knife for <20 bucks.

Seems from what you guys are saying, I can, and should.

So yeah WW, congrats you just sold another knife!

I think you should get a SS Companion and a Carbon Robust. Granted 1095 beats most stainless IMO but 12c27 sharpens up nice and might be the ticket for some areas in Florida. Plus the cost is low.

Actually received a carbon Robust, Companion, two different Mora chisel-tip knives, and the Frost drawknife from Ragnar yesterday and am very happy.

I was just going to order the Robust, prompted by your review, but you know how things go when you are placeing the order :-)

On edit: I live in the Pacific NW, on an island out in the Pacific, and am in and around saltwater quite a lot, and I've not had any trouble with the Mora carbon knives rusting, or really any carbon steel tools, as long as I prudently care for them. I wouldn't fuss about which steel I went with.

Got mine today, paid less than 15$ shipped.

Seems solid, has a nice weight to it, thicker blade than your standard Mora. Looks great.

It will get some use next weekend. :)

Re: Mora Robust review.

Postby Andrew Sterner » Mon Jul 16, 2012 5:13 pm

My Robust arrived in the mail this morning, so I made a day-hike into the local wilderness to give it a good field run.

Holy crap this was 15 bucks?!? It did everything I wanted it to do and demanded I do more.

If you need a camp knife, and you can't honestly justify buying a 200 dollar knife(as your skill level doesn't warrant it), I'd say go with this guy. 15 bucks is a ridiculous price for something that can out-perform me, maybe you. Very solid knife, more than reasonable price, I don't think it's possible to lose with this.

Sadly I was also swimming in the river(after I caught lunch), so I did not have my phone on me to take pictures. Here's one after I got home though, my bad. Next time I go out I'll have my camera so I can actually try to snap a few pics.

Ditto on the thanks for the review, already started looking for a Robust and currently tracking a couple on ebay, checking Amazon next.

I really need to drop $50.00 on various different moras (b/c I have yet to own a single one) get 3 of them and be happy. Robust, Companion and hmm...may be gimmicky but the Mora 'light my fire' knife looks intriguing. Then again the Mora 2010MG with its exotic blade / edge profile is tempting. Any comments or opinions on that particular model?

I've never owned a Mora but am getting pretty tempted. Does anyone have any Rockwell hardness numbers on the steel used in them? I'm rather particular about not having too hard of steel so sharpening can be done without any special equipment.
