Shrimpwd's bags and kits (56k beware!)

Postby shrimpwd » Sat Feb 27, 2010 11:46 pm

I decided to make a single thread here for my gear. I currently have a BOB and GHB, a small amount of EDC, and a few random other items. I will make a post for each item, and as I change them, I'll update to the newest. I will take advice on gear changes and such, but I'm on a very tight budget, and it might take a while to implement the changes.

So, here goes!

EDIT: I plan on resizing the original pics over the next day or so. What's the best size on here? 300p wide?

BOB (02/27/2010)
Image
Golite Gust pack. Weighs 1lb 2oz and can carry 25-30lbs of gear comfortably. I have it set up for a weekend hike, with a total weight of 23lbs.
Image
Image
Image
Items in the front pouch. The mesh bag in the top right holds the contents of the Mag Pouch Kit Entry #2 (seen on the contest kits page). The black bag holds my filter shown in the second picture. The blue bag holds the gear in the third picture. The bandana and toilet paper are hopefully self-explanatory. The plastic case holds my current First Aid Kit. It has hand sanitizer, some pain medications, bandaids, and a few other small items. I plan to learn more First Aid and increase the contents soon.

Image
The contents of the main pouch. The red container is my MSR Microzoid tent. It weighs roughly 3lbs complete. The large bag is my Campmor 20 degree down bag (I'd say closer to 30 degrees), and my 3/4 length Thermarest Ridgerest sleeping pad. The white bag holds my food, and the yellow my spare clothing.

Image
Image
Image
For food, this is not terrible. I am planning to try out a few MRE items I've never had. Coleman Peak1 stove and fuel work fine as long as the wind isn't bad. I'd suggest a wind screen. (Will be added soon)

I have 6 liters (1.5 gallons) capacity for water, but right now I only have 1qt of water and 1qt of gatorade filled. I feel this is a good starting water supply, unless it is dry outside and no streams are in the area. (Very rare around here)

For clothing, I have 2 silk shirts, a pair of swim trunks, a pair of shorts, my polarmax top and bottom, and spare socks and underwear. The socks and underwear will hopefully be replaced with better quality items soon, but this is what I have and am used to for now.

EDC (02/27/2010)
I currently carry my leather tri-fold wallet, keys, cell phone and a CRKT M16-10kz. I do not have pictures yet. Within the wallet is a 5ft card of duct tape, and in the coin area is a bic lighter. The keys hold my Maglite Solitaire. I have an old cell phone, a Samsung T609...

INCH (02/27/2010)

This one is a biggy!

So far, I only have the Blackhawk SOFII Ruck. Oh, and a 1qt canteen in the bottom right pocket. I will be building this thing up over time.

Pantry and water storage
Image
Image
The start of my pantry. Items will be added as they go on sale. Also planning to convert the boxes of pasta and bags of rice over to a slightly less bug-possible storage method.

Image

The first 2 pictures are of unopened spring water. I have an open shelf for another 15 gallons of spring water. That is high on my list of additions. The last picture is tap water to use for hygiene, and a Brita filter if I run out of spring water.

Nice job! It's nice to see people storing water. I think that is my weak spot. I am on rural water and have a creek and pond but there are always scenarios that would wipe those options out...

Can't wait to see your INCH put together.

Here's a nice wind shield for piggy back stoves. Keep it a few inches from the stove in an arch on the wind side. Do not wrap a piggy back stove in a windscreen. (obviously) This one has little stakes to anchor it in the ground.

Couple of little comments, I need to look over your kit more thoroughly later though.

You need some rain protection. If nothing else start with some disposable ponchos and maybe work up to some silnylon poncho/taps later.

I don't see any fixed blade knives. If you're on a budget I highly recommend a Cold Steel Bushman and a Mora Clipper. You can buy both for a little over $30 shipped and have a damn nice setup.

You said you're working on first aid, so I'll leave that be.

Nice pantry! :D Really like that you focus on having water readily available, a lot of people overlook this. Once you add some depth on those canned goods you find on sale you'll have a great setup. On the rice/pasta issue I highly recommend buying up some of the big Lock n Lock type containers to store these in. You can buy em for like 5 or 6 bucks at Walmart, maybe try to get a couple a month until you have enough. It's how I store all of my rice, flour, pastas, etc

You've got a really great start there man. You're already way ahead of most people.

There is a poncho in the mesh bag, but I didn't go into details here as it's on the Mag Pouch Kit contest right now. I've considered the fixed blade knife I have, but I don't trust the quality for heavy duty tasks, so feel the weight isn't warranted yet.

The pantry is for 5 people, so it might cover a month at the moment. (we eat way too much)

I'll look into the Lock n Locks, I've heard others talking about them before.

Thanks for the help! Keep it coming!

Those swiss alpenflage ponchos at SG are a great value in a heavy duty rain poncho. They're selling them for $15 for 5.

INCH/Winter Kit (12/11/2010)

Finally repacked this for the winter months. I scrapped most of my other kit, as I needed them in the larger pack. Please review. I can take things out without a problem, but I do not have the finances to add/replace anything right now.

Image

Blackhawk SOF Ruck, Marlin .22LR (if bugging out, not camping), Thermarest Ridgerest 3/4 pad, MSR Microzoid tent

Image

6x8 blue tarp, Coleman Peak 1 sleeping bag, Thermarest Ridgerest 3/4, Microzoid with poles, 2 polyester blankets, camo trenchcoat with hood. set of camo tops/bottoms, pair of hiking shoes, 2 pair synthetic socks, cotton/poly blend thermal layer tops/bottoms, 3 sets long socks, (bag holds 3 pair underwear), pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt (cotton), hat, military goggles, cap, gloves, leather gloves, sweatshirt, rain suit.

Image

Roughly 9-14 days food, 2 lighters, Peak 1 stove, 2 fuel canisters, pot with lid.

Image

Marlin 60 with extra tin of ammo, shammy cloth, 50ft rope, bag for first aid gear, ear plugs, Excedrin, caffeine pills, Maglite with batteries, body glide, white container (bandaids, alcohol wipes, hand sanitizer, gauze), small red Altoids container (Benadryl, aspirin, Tylenol, vitamin C, ibuprofen), blue Altoids container (cotton balls in small Ziploc), 2 rolls TP, 1 bar soap, small camp towel, plastic trowel, large red Altoids container (fire starting materials), hiking pole, monocular, spare shoelaces, silver Maglite and batteries, cheap multitool, Sharpy, glue, fixed blade knife, hatchet.

Image

3L Camelbak, 1.5L Nalgene, 3L Nalgene cantene, 1qt canteen, 1qt military canteen, bag for water filter, Katadyn water filter, 2.5 gallon water bag, 4x.5L unopened water bottles.

Thoughts:
I would love to up the food to a week of MREs, 12000 cal of Datrex, and some other goodies (instead of 2/3 goodies).
A poncho and liner would be able to replace the tarp, 2 poly blankets, sweatshirt, trench coat, and rain suit.
I removed the cheap 1qt canteen. 11.5L capacity is a bit overkill for North Georgia.
I tested the sleeping bag for 10 minutes out in 35 degree weather. Didn't have enough time for a longer test, but it didn't have any cold spots. I would love to replace this with one I know the rating on...
The tent is only a 2.5-3 season tent. It should be easier to heat, over my 3 person 3 season tent, at least.
Wool socks when I can afford them.
Ruger 22/45 or Papoose would be great, so that I could keep it within the pack.
I want a medical bag that can connect to the ALICE connectors on the top-middle pocket, with more/better items.
Titanium pot (900ml?) when I can afford it.
300' of 550 cord instead of rope would be more useful.

Is there a better way to store water long-term, within a pack, and not use sealed containers? All of my other water containers are currently empty...

Pantry 12/14/2010

Image

Image

Updated pantry shots. I took some of the advice and worked within my budget to make the pantry work better. Glass jars aren't mylar bags in 5 gallon containers, but they're better than the original plastic bags. Also, since we use this and rotate regularly, I think it's a good 1/2 step. The mylar will need to wait until we have at least 2-3 months stored here.

Questions/comments/helpful ideas welcome!

EDC - 07/02/2012

Left pocket: Leather Tri-fold wallet, Sharpie pen, keys with maglite solitaire and Coast micropliers
Image

Right pocket: prepaid phone, CRKT M16-10KZ, car door remote
Image

Hanging in front/forward of right pocket: Gerber Flik
Image

Thoughts: I use these items so often, the solitaire needs a new battery every few months, the Sharpie is nearly empty, the wallet has seen better days, the duct tape within the wallet needs replenishing (tape and mini Bic in wallet), my CRKT knife is holding up well, aside from the clip, which already lost one of the screws, the keyring on the remote broke a year or more ago.
Also, the Gerber Flik was a gift. I'd wanted a Leatherman Wave or Sidekick, but the Gerber is growing on me...
The Coast micropliers are holding up well for the amount of abuse I put it through. I was using it as if it was a full-sized multitool until I got the Flik.
I'm thinking the old maglite solitaire is nearing the point where I should replace it with something more efficient. Is there a good 1AA LED light that has an easy to use interface, for a good price?

Your pantry looks grea - makes me kind of jealous  Nice reasonable EDC too. Covers all your daily basics if your a person like most of us just out earning a paycheck.

That was my pantry 2 years ago. Give me a few hours and I'll post up a few new shots. You'll be disappointed.
I'll also have my new BOB up before the night is through. Still need to take pics of my GHB, and the INCH is completely gone right now.

I've kept my EDC mostly the same over the past few years, but the inclusion of the multitool was worth it. I knew I needed one from the start, but the micropliers were what I had. I think ANY multitool is better than none. I can't believe how useful it's been these past few weeks.

Define "good price." Also how many lumens/runtime you want. I've got an 80 lumen (40x brighter than the Solitaire) Life+Gear Highlander that I got for <13 bucks on sale. I've also got a Fenix LD01 (60-70 lumens) free to a good home, but that is a 1AAA.

Fenix e05. I assume you mean 1aaa. For the record, it's way better than a solitaire.

Thoughts?
This is very similar to what I had on my MBO entry, minus the Gerber FLik, the older large knife I don't like to use (why did I carry something I didn't want to use?), the travel hammock I'm still working on setting up for overnight hangs (and then the Microzoid can be retired to 2nd kit) and I decided the Microzoid was a better item until the hammock is ready compared to my Clip 3 I had carried on that hike. (3lb savings, and I used the shelters out there anyway!)
The idea of this bag is mostly for hiking, but also to be grabbed in an emergency bug-out situation. It should give me everything I need for the three or so days, even if the clothing is odd, or I smell bad or something...
