After you've read "OSA", be sure and write a better book so we can read it and compare it to "The Road".

???? I can write a better book than you can a post.....this doesn't even make any sense. I'm guessing you are defending Lights Out? Is it completely unreasonable to compare it with "One Second After", given the subject matter of each? I said I enjoyed Lights out, but it could have been, and I quote myself, a "little better". Clearly, if it sucked, it could have been a lot better, no? I stated my reasons/criticisms. If you want to pick and choose things I said to quote and then make snide remarks about, so be it. People will read this thread, I assume, to find out about the book, compare notes, etc. Your post provides nothing constructive at all. And if the author has some issue with what I said, all I can say is he's already gotten his piece of the $25 I spent on it....once I've bought it, I can say what I want.

Mr. Crawford:

Thank you for finally bringing the book to publication. I never got through the .pdf due to neck cramps, but really enjoyed what I read. I bought the book when it came out and greatly enjoyed it.
There's something attractive about all those people being gone, wandering in a depopulated world, scrounging cans of Campbell's pork and beans, defending one's family from marauders. Some secret part of us thinks it would be good to survive, to start over. Secretly, we know we'll survive. All those other folks will die.

Just finished reading Lights Out. I've had the free PDF file for a while, but I hate reading long books on the computer, so I put off reading it. For Christmas I got a Kobo eReader, and transferred the PDF over. Great move. Lights Out is by far the best written piece of Survivalist fiction I have read to date. The characters feel real, and possible, and the events don't seem incredibly one sided (such as in Patriots). While some parts were rather predictable (such as Jess's pregnancy, Jon being the final baddie, and Mark being elected Sheriff), there were more than a few surprises. All in all, a very good read, although I would love to see something about the Karate Man as Sheriff. Seems like there would be enough potential there for another book.

Thank you all for your very kind comments. There is a LO sequel planned, but we don't have a timeline yet. We are shooting at having my second novel, Lost & Found, available this summer.

Thanks again.

Just go buy the book or get kindle.
Anything left on web to dl is just a teaser, not full story.
Some kid thought the pdf was full book, he read it in less than two hours.

Elementary, my dear Vanniek71...simply google "lights out" + Halffast + pdf. Worked for me the day before yesterday, at least.

Cheers!

yeah saw that, but that link is dead. Looks like the consensus is that since it went to a book, the author had to pull it.

I read it on .pdf a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Thanks David for posting that for free back then. Decided to enjoy it again and thought for some reason I was missing part of the book in .pdf so I went online to find new links. Long story short, rather than read my .pdf version (with eye strain) I bought the soft cover version as a way to compensate David for the effort he put into it. Its worth it.

Just finished it. It was honestly one of the best books I've ever read and by far the best of the books that I've read that were suggested in this forum. Day by Day was a close second.

The way he paints the scene gives you enough detail to clearly imagine it without throwing in pointless detail to fill pages. Loved the way he presented and dealt with the problems that occur.

I hope there is a follow up.

David has a day job; writing is his hobby. He's working on a new book, and I'm sure if he got some money for Light's Out he'd be able to spend more time writing.

I'm having a hard time reading the book. Not that I don't understand the subject matter, it's the fact that I do.

There are just too many things right in the beginning that are too convenient, and the characters are portrayed in a way that keeps shifting back and forth. I don't know, it's hard to explain. It's little things that keep turning me off. So far there have been a lot of technical falsities. IE. running 2 A/Cs and a deep freezer off of a portable generator, swapping the intake system on an engine in 2.5hrs by a semi-inexperienced character (his own statement), the statement by that same character on what an engine needs to run.

It's almost like the wasn't a technical editor that caught some of these things.

Also, I don't care to read every little bit of commentary or quip or jive that is said. I'm betting the book would be 1/2 to 3/4 the size if it wasn't for these.

I'm really hoping this book gets better, and the writing style changes a bit. Otherwise, I'm going to give it away to anyone that will have it.

Maybe this is a good read for a beginner, but IMO it's not living up to the hype it generated.

Mark me not impressed... yet. :(

I read Lights Out on my droid kindle app a few weeks ago, having purchased the book from amazon. I couldn't put this book down and unfortunately finished it in only a few short days. Very realistic characters and situations that were well written.
I'm reading something else now which is more "Star Trek" technobabble than an actual story. While interesting, this new book seems like an instruction manual wrapped inside a short story compared to LIghts out and is not as entertaining.

Would gladly purchase the sequel.

...unfortunately I had read this thread before purchasing the book, and already knew a few of the spoilers in the plot :gonk:

I'm assuming you have something to do with this project?

If so, congrats!

I'm curious if you would care to impart how many copies of "Lights Out" you were able sell?

Was always wondering since it started as a post on a web forum.
