BOV Contingiancy

Postby donaldderby » Tue Jul 03, 2012 8:46 pm

A couple of days of wrenching on my truck and Badlands BOT thread got me thinking, not about our BOV's per say but rather how we are planning on keeping them running. For instance i know of many on and off this forum who say I have tools for working on and maintaining my BOV but i don't feel enough has been said about how. We are used to saying ok i need an oil change let me go get my oil and filter from the parts store and do it. But what about the SHTF scenario where we cant afford to be without transpo. What about centrifugal oil filters to eliminate how often our conventional filters need to be changed, what about switching to cartridge instead of canister filters for less occupied space. What about our on board air compressor strong enough to power our tools for these situations, and what about thinking wither quieter hand tools might be best in a given situation or if the speed of pneumatic is more beneficial. We should be thinking about setting up our BOT with the same axles and tires as our BOV so that if one endures a catastrophic break we might scavenge the remainder for our repair and spares and keep on trucking. This is just my rant to get us more in the combat mindset. Let me know what y'all think.

This is why layering, even with BOV's, is something promoted around here. ATM Jeep hauls bikes and canoe. Jeep dies, canoe gets towed by bike. I also walk quite a bit.

How bad has the SHTF?
If it's really bad interstates might make good junkyards/parts stores.
You could also drain oil out of cars and if it's fairly clear and free from metal flakes etc...use it.

Depends on the situation. I keep a temporary fix kit, but if things go so totally tits up that I can't get parts without trying to steal them from other vehicles, I'm not planning on driving that much.

What are planning on using your vehicle for if things get that bad?

So how many of you have 3,000 miles worth of fuel, at half your daily MPG, stocked up? Or 5,000? Or 10,000? How often do you have to fill up compared to oil changes, replacing axles and brakes, or do an engine overall?

Reliability and some spare parts to ease impromptu repairs before being forced to hit up the auto parts store or junk yard are great, but the vast majority of preppers are going to run out of fuel long before it comes time to do many repairs. That money, time, and energy would probably be better spent in long-term oriented easily- or self-sustained preparations.

FWIW you should be able to at the very least do an oil change.

ZPAW they won't stay running forever, even on biodiesel, so having critters or something Human Powered makes sense though.
