Make in Bulk & Freeze for Later

Postby Anianna » Fri Apr 20, 2012 7:06 pm

For anybody who likes to make a lot of food at once and have some easy frozen meals for later, here is a collection of make & freeze recipes (each image links to recipe page):

The author calls this a "mini pie" but I think it's more like a "hearty muffin":

The mini-pie/hearty muffin things look awesome! I've made something similar before using tons of chopped up veggies and meat and just eggs in muffin tins (which also freeze well), but these seem much more dinner-like. Planning to get a stand up freezer as soon as I can wheedle a friend with a truck into going to Sears with me, these are great links to have.

Thanks for the post - a good idea,

My son makes mini-meatloafs in a muffin tim\n and freezes those en-mass - need a fast dinner? Boil up some rice, add a frozen entree and zuf - dinner in a hurry.

Just one note - never put more in your freezer than you are willing to lose in a power outage...

We have been using our freezer a lot, upright model rather than chest type. We look for meat deals in the meat department to freeze for later use and plan on splitting a cow with the family later this year once they get their freezer. These meals seem like a great addition, and were not something I had considered. Its like a frozen MRE!

Thanks for sharing these. I'll definitely have to dig into the details of the links when I've got more time. Been thinking about doing the "make my own frozen dinners" thin for a bit now due to buys schedule.

I have a decent-sized vacuum sealer and several of those rectangular, plastic "takeout" trays. When I make soup, stew or chili; I always prepare in bulk. I then lay trays along the counter, ladle equal amounts into each, freeze them solid, pop them out and vacuum-seal them. The end result is "bricks" of soup stacked neatly in the back of the freezer, waiting to be brought back in a pot of simmering water... akin to the old Stouffer's "boil-in-bag" offerings.

Quoted and reposted for truth.

Freezers sure are handy appliances, but for the "prepper" you shouldn't rely on them too heavily. A loss of power can, and will, result in a loss of food (and, consequently, a loss of money).

Good looking recipes, though!

Just invite people over and use all the food in the freezer first :). (If the are people, I realise it's a zombie website :) ).
Read that you use all the freezer food first, when all the power went out in some disaster scenario in a fiction novel.

I think in the story, they burned or burried the off food so it wouldn't smell the house up.
Sorry, can't remember the title of the book.

Also, home made sausage rolls, spring rolls and ham/ cheese pinwheels last ages in the freezer. Stored in lunch boxes.
My family had heaps left over from birthday parties so we froze them all.
No, no one has gotten sick from anything frozen yet and it's kept well for several months.

I might freeze some slow cooked food for quick meals :).

I cook and freeze meats, quite often. I have grilled chicken and ground beef cooked up and ready to go in the freezer right now. Toss a broccoli steamer in the microwave, heat up the chicken, toss with alfredo sauce, and there's dinner in 15 minutes.
Mater tua caligas gerit!

...I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention to what I was thinking.

Is he willing to post a recipe? I've been trying to get into the habit of making full batches of meals like I would for the family when home while in my apartment so I can live off the leftovers during the week. So far, I'm finding I can make 2-3 meals (yes, I eat a lot when you consider what I cook should serve four people once and not me three times), which is a huge help when I come back to my apartment from work or late night grad classes and don't feel like cooking.
