OK so this is the pair of pistols I will be using in matches. I plan on shooting duelist.


This is my match shotgun. It is a EAA 12 Guage Coach Gun with External Hammers.


Now all I need is for my Taylor's and Company 1873 Trapper to come in and I'll be all set. I'm going to watch a match tomorrow morning, I am really looking forward to meeting some fellow shooters in my area.

Went to my first match with the Lincoln County Regulators today and had a blast. Didn't get to shoot in the comp since I still don't have a rig but I did get to shoot two stages with borrowed gear and man am I hooked now. I realized I need to buy or build a gun cart for when I go to matches. I also noticed that jeans boots and a button up shirt is the standard uniform for the club. A few guys where completely decked out in traditional gear but 75% where just wearing modern cowboy clothing.

They also had to side matches. One was wild bunch and the other was a zombie shoot with belly guns (derringers and pocket pistols). Both side matches looked like a lot of fun and I think Wild Bunch will soon take off as a stand alone event with this club (and I've heard that is already the case in many clubs). For those that don't know Wild Bunch is a new competition style that gets it's name from the movie "The Wild Bunch." The weapons used in this competition are 1911s, lever action rifles, and 1897 or Model 12 Shot guns. The movie takes place in 1913 so the weapons used for these matches are restricted to those available in 1913. Most shooters where using their 1897 and Lever gun from the main match for the Wild Bunch stage.

Like I said I'm officially hooked! Can't wait to shoot my first match, sadly I work during the July shoot so I'll have to wait until August to shoot with them.

There are a few other, more "deluxe", gun carts out there for 2x or 3x the price, but that one seems to work just fine.

I finally got the whole set in. Here they are at their first range day together:








They all shot pretty well. The shotty and rifle need to be broken in a bit more but the range is only 15 minutes away.

Too damn hot. Nothing like high desert heat, at least that's a dry heat - I don't know how anyone could live where it's 100deg and 70+% humidity.

Found out through a local IPSC guy here at work that there's a HUGE CAS club over in Ripon, they meet every weekend I guess. May have to take a wander over there and see it first hand.

*I do have a unnatural desire to break out my TX issued boots/hat/belt - and I do have cowboy ancestry in the family...

I'll take the heat of the high desert over high humidity and high temps any day. I barely survived the 70% humidity and 100+ temps of Louisiana.

As far as CAS goes, good luck my friend. It is rather addicting. I hope you have a good local club to join. Better start saving up the gun funds.

Got into CAS a couple of years ago. Here's my kit:

1. Pair of Ruger Vaqueros in .44 SPL with 4 5/8" barrels
2. Marlin 1894 Lever Action in .44 Magnum (using .44 SPL ammo)
3. Stoeger 12 Guage SXS.

I shoot Duelist, one handed and do quite well for an old guy.

I'm a SASS member, have USFA pistols in .45lc, a Marlin lever action rifle in .45lc, and my double barrel shot gun. SAS is very fun and really different, it's not easy. I'd say they all would be good verse vombies, their range is not all that great due to the ammo that I use. Cowboy loads are pretty light, about 70 yards and thats it.

If I may....

I used to shoot CAS and I won't toot my horn too much, but I'm pretty good. In a shtf scenario, I'll reach for my vaqs, 92, and/or coach over my 1911s or AR.

Oh, and my persona is a preacher. I just wear old style clothing, nothing special or fancy or expensive. Not much different than you might see on the streets of the Podunk city I grew up in.

Shot my first match in a few months....i need to practice! I felt rusty all day. I also had some issues with one of my pistols. Redemption will come next month! I promise I'll get to the range more often.

On the plus side I liked our stages much this time.

I've always had use of my father's Glenfield 30-30 and I've always enjoyed shooting it. I swung by my buddy Dane's shop in Bee Caves (Sportsman's Finest) and he talked me into it. I went in for an 870 and came out with this .44. It's a beautiful gun i can't wait until I get a moment to take it down to the range and try it out this week. I also picked up a CHL worthy side piece but that's not cowboy action so it will remain unmentioned here..

I'm looking to add a sling and probably an ammo pouch. I'm struggling with updating the sights.. I like the open sights.. I guess the range will be the proving grounds for that. Any suggestions for Slings, ammo carrying and sights are appreciated.

Just got back from the range today.. broke my rossi's cherry. damn fine weapon. Straight, accurate, well calibrated, smooth action, no compalignts after 200 rounds.. It kicked a lot less than I imaged a .44 to kick. I shot both .44 specials and .44 mags. Of course the mags kicked a bit more but they also fly more flat. I only took it to 25 then 50 yards. Stock sights are a bit hard for me to work.. They remind me of my red rider bb gun.. time for the first upgrade.. sights (and metal follower).

You need a Blackhawk or Vaquero in 44 to pair with that rifle. Glad to hear she is working well for you.

Yep, After the range i cleaned and oiled the gun.. made a list of things I want to do.. mainly follower cap, springs and finish the finish.. This gun actually has a build date of 2010 and it's wood is quite nice. I've read others were not too happy with their mystery wood, but this one has very visible grain patterns.. it's not exactly exotic but it's there.
