Compare 'quiet' .22 Ammo

Postby ElevenBravo » Fri Jun 15, 2012 9:50 pm

If you want quiet, you will have to settle for less power... But you CAN have quiet without a can.

Tried it. It will not cycle any semi auto and it's pretty loud. The CCI subsonic was is just as loud and cycles the action.

Just for fun, you can skip the first 2:30 and get right to the 'test' demo.

Absent any kind of measurement device, the video is subjective to say the least.

Has anybody tried the cci subsonic with a 10/22? Will it work the action?

Aguilla Sniper SSS is pretty quiet. Will not cycle a semi though.

22LR CB Short from CCI has to be the quietest 22LR ammo I've ever shot. From my CZ452 it's just silly quiet - I'm 100% positive my pellet gun is louder. I'd imagine it'd work on a revolver also, but there's just not enough umph to kick back a blowback action.

Very true . I've used CB Longs for years in my old Remington 514 bolt & 12 pump rifles . "ALL" you hear is the firing pin noise and the bullet thumping the target . Air guns are considerably louder . as mentioned , they will not operate a semi auto .

Protip: To fire low-power ammo though a semi-auto rifle, hold the cocking lever forward with the thumb, then work the action like a bolt-gun. We used to do this all the time on a pair of suppressed 10/22s. Holding the bolt forward prevents it from short-stroking. I wouldn't bother with a semi-auto pistola though.

Thanks for the video, although without a dB measurement it's not entirely helpful (more of a suggestion than a criticism). In terms of subsonic ammo, I prefer GEMTECH's subsonic ammunition through my can.

They are fun with a henry, but the 16" barrel on most Henry 22's still leaves them a little loud.

I've got an old marlin bolt gun with a considerably longer barrel and it really makes the CB caps quiet. MUCH more quiet than even the Aguila super colibris, and a hell of a lot more accurate too.

and, the CB's will kill a groundhog at 50 feet.

I know it was fifty feet because I measured from my recliner, across my living room, over the deck, and into my suburban backyard.

This was when you "qualified" to move to the South Side, wasn't it?

Or north Georgia. My uncle shot his first deer with a 20ga slug from the living room couch.

I am at work, so I can't watch the video. But I LOVE CB longs. They have the same power and noise as the CB shorts, but have a longer case to allow them to load easier in more firearms. I used them on rabbits and skunks out to about 30 yards with good effect. And in many of my old, long-barreled bolt actions, they make less noise than a BB gun. Always a plus. I have also used them to put down lambs and sheep humanely with a tap to the back of the head, so don't go thinking that they are toys. They pop right through skulls up close. Now that I have fewer close neighbors (I moved, I didn't feed them to zombies or anything) I just use regular .22 LRs. But when I lived in a more built-up (but still legal for shooting) area, they were what I did all of my pest control with.

this is truth. Shooting them from both my henry and my Heritage Rough rider, the CB caps still tend to be quieter than some pellet guns i have shot.

Video is an incredibly poor demonstrator for how, 'loud' or, 'quiet' something is.

CCI subsonic cycles all of my semi autos reliably. I bought 10,000 rounds of it and am happy with my purchase. :)

+1 on the CCI CB shorts. Out of a heavy barrel bolt action all you hear is the click of the firing pin.
