My Kifaru Scout load-out

Postby rhunter1 » Fri Jun 15, 2012 7:50 pm

I always like seeing others' gear configured to work for them, so here's my contribution:

This is my current day hike setup for my kifaru G1 scout.

Image

Image

On the back of the pack is a BFG Helium Whisper medium horizontal pouch (coyote brown) and above that is an emdom baby util pouch (greenish). The BFG helium whisper pouch is pretty much new so I'm trying it out. So far so good; we'll see about the longevity of it as it gets broken in.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I've been using the emdom pouch as a place to put small items that I don't need immediate access to, but don't want to search through my main pack for.

Image

On the left side I use a TT small radio pouch to hold my garmin rino gps/radio, and a ATS baton pouch for my "stray dog insurance". I've been using the baton pouch for a while now and have been eying up an HSGI model. I feel like the retention on this ATS one is too much. Maybe it's because I have the padded handle baton.

Image

Image

On the right side on my belts I always have a TT 1H. It's cheap and has worked well for me. This is where I keep my multitool, flashlight, energy packs, etc.

Onto the inside...
You can see there's a good amount of space left in the top of the pack. This is where I'll add my rations for the day, extra bottles, etc. I have two L&L's linked together (thanks to Mel's posts a while back). This works great.

Image

Here's the contents laid out, sans L&L's hung from loops. Water bottle for the K-9 (hydration + make-shift toy if need be), hygiene kit, personal hydration, light + fire kit and FAK.

Image

Image

Pulling the L&L's out. The top mesh L&L holds 2 pullouts. One containing cordage and the other containing some emergency food.

Image

Image

Image

Image

And the bottom L&L holds my emergency cookware, emergency shelter and kifaru meat baggie.

Image

That's basically it. Hopefully this is useful to someone.

Neat set up, champ!

Human & canine needs are covered pretty well.

What emergency shelter are you using btw?

Sweet setup... But its almost as many bags as it is things in the bags (Don't get me wrong, I will take any of those bags you don't want  )

Just thinking weight-wise, fewer bags would help, but maybe organization trumps weight?

My theory is organisation and modularity is ftw personally.

^Obviously that's within reasonable parameters.

Thanks. I prefer the organization. The Kifaru pull outs and L&L's are very lightweight. Same with the helium whisper pouch. Organization is very helpful and key for me. Everything can be grabbed with my eyes closed or in low-light conditions.

My emergency shelter is a 3 mil contractor trash bag plus a AMK 2 person heat sheet.

I dig it. :D

Could you squeeze a ponchotarp into that rig? Not just as a part of your emergency shelter system but in case of an unexpected deluge?

Great kit man. I need to look into some spray: I'd actually carry it if I had it on my pack belt like that. Looks very well set up. How do you like the Kifaru bag? If I remember right it doesn't have any internal frame, but you don't seem to have more than 20# there anyway. Do you use a water bladder or bottles? And how long do you hike with this? I am now out of questions!

Yeah I think I could add a poncho tarp in the shelter L&L pretty easy. It's not bulging at the seams. I used to carry a light and cheap poncho but removed it from my kit. I came to the conclusion that if it's raining that hard I can use the trash-bag as a make-shift poncho, risking looking like a hershey kiss and all...;)

The kifaru scout does have 2 aluminum stays (13") that help transfer the weight of the pack onto your hips via the belt. Like all my kifaru bags, they just keep going and going and going. Full on modularity, durability, etc. I've tried switching to other packs but I keep coming back to the kifaru bags.

I've never actually weighed the pack, but I'd guess about 20 pounds is right.

I switch between bladders and bottles.

Day hike's are normally 4-5 miles.

Thanks for answering the questions. I was looking pretty hard at one of these. The pic from Kifaru shows it riding like this

Image

Seems like an intriguing layout, how do you like hiking with it on the lumbar area rather than higher up like a conventional pack? I'm assuming the omni belt keeps it from swinging/swaying...

Thanks!

Hiking with the scout and the omni-belt keeps your upper back nice and cool. Hiking with my tailgunner (another lumbar pack) and my E&E above it brings a whole other set-up and modularity. There's a thread about it over on the Kifaru forums.

I also use Kifaru pullouts. They're a win. Nice looking pack.

Thanks WW. Kifaru pullout's and L&L's have tons of usability.

As an aside, I'm waiting on a koala lite to add to this load-out. It will most likely bring most of my belt worn items to the chest which will be awesome for accessibility.

Which panel(s) did you get for the front? I really want a koala lite but there isn't a whole lotta info out there in terms of reviews. Also, what color did you get, FG?

After a lot of contemplating, I went with the flat pocket. I'll probably end up with all three current panels at some point because I like the idea of swapping out panels for different roles. The koala lite is so streamlined the pictures just don't show it justice.

I got OD as the color so I can easily differentiate my pack straps (all FG or CB) from my koala. I figure whatever panel you put on the front though is basically what you're going to see. Like I said, at only an inch deep the koala lite is very thin and low pro.

I will try to do a review one it when I get it.

I can't wait for the review and pics. And like I said in your thread over at kifnet, I'm dying to see what the OD green koala lite looks like. I can't find a pic anywhere. How long was the wait they quoted you?

I am torn between the Scout and the X-ray for a hiking/hunting/fishing and fast and light GHB. Thanks for posting the pics. Seeing this is making me lean towards the scout.

I can say that both the scout and xray would make great bags in all of those roles mentioned.

The X-ray would probably be a better choice because I don't know how well the scout will carry over my heavy winter outerwear.

I haven't had any problems in any seasonal clothing carrying any of my kifaru packs.
