Need some advice about what to purchase.

Postby Glockman » Tue Jun 19, 2012 2:08 pm

So this is the typical, too many gun needs/not enough money dilemma.

Next month I will have enough money to buy my AR upper. I do not have an AR, I am building one and have pretty much all of the pieces except for the upper (BCG is on order). But I know I also want to add another Glock to my collection. I am getting out of the military in about a month and a half, and moving back to Illinois in August/September. I found a local LE Glcok dealer that apparently sells Glocks to AD military for $425 brand new (about the same price the upper is going to cost me). I have a G17 already, but have intentions of buying a 19 for my (soon to be) wife eventually. I also want to get a Glock 26 eventually, in case IL ever does get concealed carry.

So do I go with my original plan and complete the AR? Or do I get the Glock 19 while I am still in, and save probably at the very least $100 that I would have to spend in the future?

What would you do? Thanks guys!

Aren't your military credentials still good (after you're no longer active) for a few years....like for shopping at a PX and such?

Nah only if you retire military. I'm just separating after my ETS, so I won't have all the benefits.

I'm hoping maybe someone on here has gotten the military GLOCK discount after they got out and can make my decision easier.

My knee jerk response would be to finish the AR, then get more glock later, since you already own a pistol and have no AR. A pistol and rifle is better than two pistols, I think.

Hmmm.....My local guy still gives the discount (glock and three magazines for $399+tax) for current or former military and LEOs. Maybe that's just something he does on his own.

Completely different scenario then.

As someone with neither AR nor Glock*, I vote finish the AR.

If you were going to a party, and they were serving koolaid, would you rather have a few different flavours, or one flavour and a few different cup sizes?

Lol I guess it depends as to if the one flavor is one I really really like.

I think you are right though, might just need to hammer out this AR first :)

Finish the AR.
Being former military myself, I like the memories and familiarity with the AR.
Good luck with your ETS and becoming a PFC again!

I will take a counter to what everybody else has suggested and say that you should get the one you care about her own piece of protection, buy the G19 and get it engraved....

If you haven't already proposed it would make for one hell of a memorable proposal to give her a gun with the words "marry me" engraved on the slide................
Whatever works!

^^EPIC IF she likes guns...

Do you know if she wants the G19? Otherwise, snag a G34 instead.

Personally, you have an SGL21, so your rifle requirement is more than covered. As a former grunt turned family man, the SGL21 is a much better fit. I see lots of AR's at the ranges that suffer reliability issues because cleaning/maintenance time/money take a back seat to family stuff. That's normal and fine, Uncle Sugar doesn't pay the bills or buy the ammo anymore. Family can finally come first.

I would buy the Glock first, either way. Rifles are cool, but you have that slot filled. Pistols are what gets used the majority of the time.

I know I am new here but what everyone else said, I'd finish the AR. As good as the AK is it suffers at longer ranges correct? At 400m 7.62x39 has a pretty bad drop off(With credit to Dave M). AR could be good for those types of distances and even closer.

Did have a question, you say you are getting out of the military, are you still going to be in reserve?(Example: 4 years active, 4 years reserve) Or just out completely. You may qualify for a discount if you are still being kept in reserve.

Midwest in Lyons IL
Glock L.E. Prices are available to:

- All sworn Law Enforcement officers (LEO) State, County, and City

- All Federal Law Enforcement officers (LEO) FBI, US Marshals, and

DEA etc

- All corrections officers, including Parole and Probations officers

- All Retired LEO with “retired” credentials including Federal, State,

County, and City

- State licensed security companies (ie: Loomis Fargo, RAM,

Securitas, etc)

- State/City licensed security officers

- Active Military personnel – all branches

- National Guard personnel – all branches

- Military reserve personnel – all branches

- Legitimately retired Military veterans with “retired” Military ID

- All TSA employees

- Licensed paramedics and EMTs

- Fire Fighters (including volunteers) with appropriate ID

- Commercial pilot license holders and Federal Flight Deck Officers

- Court Judges

- District Attorneys and Deputy District Attorneys

Was just curious, but hell that is a wide range of jobs available for a discount.

Hhhhmmmm.... If you already have everything except the upper for the AR Id say finish it first....
Because more or less if you have a lower sitting there, its nothing more then a nonfunctional paper weight thats leagally a firearm.
And that makes me sad because a potentially useful weapon deserves to be a usable weapon... and Ar parts are starting to get a bit hard to find it seems, while glocks seem to be available just about anytime you want one.

Thats my thinking on it, for what its worth....Im new here aswell

Just a thought, but justifying self defense past 300m may be a little tough...

Not saying it can't happen, but it's a hard one to fly...

Zombies!

Honestly that is about it I suppose. For self defense an AK seems fine. Not trying to start an AK VS AR war <_>

Nor am I, I'm feeling too old for that tonight. Either work, if the guy behind it knows how to run the thing.

The man already has a top teir AK. Pistols see more use in SD.
