Lambing has finished now & I'm not currently working with straw each day so at present my eyes are fine.

I didn't come across any formulas/recipes for eyewash that I trusted enough to try out myself. So for now I'm still using Optrex.

I wonder if you could just eyeball the ingredients list for Visine? 1/2 normal saline and tiny amount of Borax, iirc, not sure of the proportions.

Thanks Squinty I'll look into that.

I have bottles of saline already in my FAK :)

To be clear, I didn't mean 5/50 borax and saline!

1/2 normal saline = 0.45 % NaCl, vs. 0.9 %. I'd imagine the boric acid concentration would be even smaller.

And in fact, ignore everything I just said in my last post, I am dumb - visine also contains a vasoconstrictor and a bunch of other stuff, so don't know how safe it would be to use it in quantities sufficient for flushing or to remove hay dust and such.
Other stuff like 0.1 % dextran I think as a lubricant. The boric acid is probably just a preservative or something.
I still think saline, or some dilution thereof, would be about right.

Thanks for the update Squinty

Edit: I think it's the vasoconstrictor that makes the eyewash I already use so good. Red irritated eyes just go 'ahhh that's better'. This is probably also why water doesn't have the same effect.
I've come across a few witch hazel eyewash recipes, but it's astringent (to the best of my knowledge) so I don't want to test it on my eyes :gonk:
