Completely off topic but does permethrin fuck with NIR?

Completely on topic I am, once again, jealous as hell. That is all.

Two gallons of booze are on their way to STL.

Too bad I had to pull out of this year's ZCon, but there's always next year. :D

so in other news (unrelated to the new smileys  )

I picked up a pair of vibrams today, the regular kso, I kinda wanted a pair of treksports but they didn't have any instock and it probably wouldn't have gotten here in time for zcon, though the other nearby rei might have a pair I can exchange for

those that regularly attend zcon with them... kso vs treksport?.

just worried about sliding on that step\smooth rock face on the way up to basecamp

they are very awesome btw... I wore them for the better part of 8 hours today... my feet didn't get sore probably because I usually walk around the neighborhood barefoot

I wore my KSO's last year, they grip really well. I slipped around less than in previous years.

Are any of you showing up early this year and staying in a local hotel the night before? Several of us from ZSC020 are planning on coming down early and getting a cheap motel room, so we can show up bright and early the next morning for Z-Con (not to mention taking one last civilized dump and having one last shower ;) )

I'm thinking about heading down to the area Tuesday. I should be able to finish work by 4pm which could put me near St Louis around 8pm. I'd be interested in joining up with a caravan of ZS'ers. PM sent to Mystic_1

Looks like the weather forecast is putting us with rain on wednesday/thursday, possibly.

Guess we'll see, but I kinda welcome rain. I'm gonna bring a poncho just in case, but I'm more of a type to wear a hat and embrace the wet, and keep a dry set of clothes in the tent. I'll be making sure to deploy the rain fly this year, though... which will suck for ventilation. I have a battery operated tent fan that I hang from the 'attic shelf' in my tent, though, which helps.

Any other tips? I haven't camped in the rain in a good while. I may have concerns about my tent stakes holding up in mud... hmm

Last year, I put the rain fly up the last night since there were storm warnings. The mini fan was the only thing that kept me from sweating to death.

I brought a poncho last year, and will bring one again this year. Like you, I don't mind getting wet, but last year (since we had rain forecast for the float trip), I put the rain fly on my tent, wrapped my ruck in my poncho then threw my ruck back into the tent.

I've never actually deployed it yet, but my pack does have a rain cover. I might have to check it out.

I just realized last night that, while I have the Obrez / Mosin Pistol ready to go... I forgot to bring ammo for it. All my 54r and clips are back at the house, and I was planning to leave from work Friday night, for Missouri, meaning I won't be back at the house... but I think I might have to make an unscheduled trip back to Lafayette tonight. Can't be short on ammo for my new toy. I still get giddy shooting it, so I want to make sure I can.

I was reviewing last year's thread for ZCon, and find there was much more talk about gear to bring; wicking shirts, proper socks, etc, than this year. Hopefully people aren't being complacent - it looks to be hotter than last year.

I need to see about getting a larger bit of shelf liner - my current piece works but is getting worn. That, and make sure I got a hank of paracord...

Is that the same piece I cut off of my roll for you last year? I've got the same bit I'm bringing this year

I've got every pair of smart-wool hiking socks I own already in my ruck. As soon as I do laundry, I'll be throwing in the rest of my wicking socks. I think I'm bringing something like a dozen pairs of socks this year. I was changing them twice a day last year, three times when I kept falling into the creek on that last fucking rock.

haha yea, it's the same piece! It's done its time I figure.

I just need to decide if I want to wear boots or my running shoes this year, for my non-water trekking. I really felt like the boots were mostly a PITA last year, and bulkier than necessary. It's too late to get some Vibrams and rock those, or I would. I just want to break them in and be used to them before I go hiking with them.

I'm slightly worried now about my hammocks tarp stakes holding in the rain :ohdear:

JTNieman
if you dont care about the quality of the ammo, I have probably 50 or so rounds of 7.62x54R I can bring,... I have no stripper clips though :(

Last year I brought some plastic shopping bags to make weights with if my stakes didn't work. I was fine tho.

My tip is to pitch an A-line tarp over your tent instead of the rainfly, and keep the fly on standby in case the wind drives rain sideways enough to make it under the tarp.

It really is too damn hot to use the fly, I leave mine off every year and just lower the sides of the tarp if it looks like rain.

Good call. The only tarps I have are those cheap blue automotive tarps I keep in my truck for cargo - but I've used them for car-camping before, so I guess it'll work here too.
