Bail out bag

Postby ferretrodeo » Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:26 pm

So, I have a bug out bag but I have been putting a bail out bag together. I picked one up at Quantico a few weeks ago on a whim and am now trying to figure out what goes in it. Right now I have 6 30 rnd p-mags, quickclot, compression bandage, and a kit for a sucking chest wound. It still has a lot of room left. I don't want to fill it up with junk but I also don't want to be thinking "CRAP! Wish I had put a "insert gizmo name here" when I get into a shtf situation.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A bail-out bag is basically a latch-ditch effort. It differs from a get-home back in that it is a) temporary, but with no pre-set destination in mind and b) combat-oriented.

In that vein, we had a bunch of folks in my unit carrying bail-out bags (from LAPoliceGear) with extra mags, maps, a nalgene, compass, and a GOOD blow-out FAK. I like the idea of a poncho being thrown in for easy concealment, and also water purification and fire-starting means, as well as signalling devices. Other than that, it's highly subjective. Foods, extra socks, weapons cleaning kit, etc etc.

What you've described is more of a "rifle fighting bag", gear designed to get you through a gunfight more than bail you out. Gear for making holes in others, and fixing holes in you and yours.

I had a similar bag, but ended up filling it with bottles of water. I wanted a smaller more efficient bag for fighting gear.

You should keep that stuff seperate from your other gear, in case you need to ditch your fighting gear for whatever reason. A bag like yours would go great with a small bugout bag, packed with items way more likely to be needed that you wouldn't want to ditch, or have confiscated by the authorities.

Is this a GHB or fighting bag (i.e. bail-out)? There is a difference, but the lines can be easily and efficiently blurred.

It is typically better to have want you need then find a bag to fit, other than just buying a bag and filling it because you can.

Wouldn't an IFAK already be on your person (PC or LBE) if you're going into a situation where you'd be carrying a rifle?

Just because you have a rifle doesn't mean you have a FLC or some suchness. I can't tell if this is sarcasm or a serious question. lol

And an IFAK isn't a very awesome blow-out kit... they're really only there to keep you alive until the Medic comes along. He probably won't have a medic, so an efficient blow-out/trauma/whatever-you-want-to-call-it FAK is much more critical in an instance where you're going to need a rifle than making sure you have Load-Bearing-Equipment.

I thought about making something similar to this. More so to hand out or help others in need.
So far I have included an Israeli, Z-Pack gauze, SWAT-T tourniquet, ACE bandage, and small basic first aid kit for the medical portion. A few Micropur tabs. Bic mini and Storm matches. Just picked up a couple Adventure Medical Kits SOL survival blankets this weekend to put in each. They seem like they might be better quality than the average space blanket and they are safety orange with survival info on one side. Probably add a Platypus collapsible quart bottle and MRE.

Thanks for the replies.

The bag is more intended to be used as a "oh shit, an ambush" kinda bag. I have a BOB but I wouldn't have it on when I am driving. I want something I can grab to defend my house or jump out of my car when the bullets start flying. It is intended to have what I might need to survive a fight right friggin now, not a survive for 3 days in the woods bag.

Hope this helps.

Mine is stocked as follows.

4 Troy Battle Mags (loaded)
1 Glock 23 with 3 mags (loaded)
1 Streamlight LED scorpion
1 AMK Trauma/Blow out kit
1 Leatherman Wave
1 small fixed blade.
1 small set binos
6 Flexicuffs
2 Cliff Bars
1 package Harabo "Tactical" Gummie Bears
2 bottles water
A couple of cyalume sticks

This set up is designed for bail out to an active shooter threat. I use the LAPG Bail Out Bag. It works well for me but your mileage may very.
Hoping to bring back common sense to the prepping community.
