I don't buy Burpee crap any more. Everything I have is open pollinated heirloom stuff, mostly from seeds of change (.org). Strangely, two packets of Purple dragon beans failed to germinate completely, and I lost almost my entire first seed set to rainy weather, so I am really happy with what survived.

Who would've thought the desert southwest was a great environment for potatoes. Mine are thriving this year, and they are in the part of the yard that gets the most sun.

Today's haul:

Hatch, Cubanelle and Yellow banana. The Cubanelles are fantastic fried in a pan and salted. Getting way more of these next year.

Into the smoker for the hatchs. I'll blowtorch the skin off later.

Off to brine my pickles.

I have snails swarming my lemon tree. Anyone have any ways to stop them?

Here in Oregon, slugs are our PITA. But snails and slugs are similar, so maybe one of our tactics will work. The easiest, especially for a tree, would be to put a ring of copper tape around the trunk, down towards the bottom. Another thing that might work is a sprinkling of diatomaceous earth around the trunk. It will need to be re-sprinkled after rain. Of course, for both things, you will need to pre-pick the buggers out of the tree first.

A great thing for snails and slugs is flat beer in a little dish. They drink and drown... Not a bad way to go...

In a few days, i should have my first squash and zucchini. Radishes and peppers look good. Corn is finally getting a lil rain today. And okra is coming along nicely.

I gotta say i'm ultra jealous of you guys already getting cucumbers, peppers, and squash. Most of my first plantings of them didn't survive the frost and stuff but I learned better ways to protect it for next year and replanted. My green tomatoes are about golf ball size so it won't be long now on those. Other stuff is starting to put on also.

Squash shouldn't be but a couple days and a good friend of mine is already getting some squash off of his plants just a couple days ago.

But one thing I did learn is the corn survived the frost beautifully and this morning I have been harvesting most of it that is ready. http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4098/imag0116uw.jpg

Sorry couldn't get pic to embed it kept failing due to unknown image size or some crud.

My strawberries have just exploded in size with the two storms that went through and the temp going up. I have close to 12 berries either formed or the flowers. My in laws have a ton of vegetables but they hardly use them and the plants just go to rot. If I knew how to make my own tomato sauce I would use their roma tomatos.

How does your garden grow: 2012 Edition!

Postby anonymac » Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:08 am

Im getting nice production from most of my plants. Already harvested the first few tomatoes, peppers (3 kinds) and zuchinni. However my root crops are disappointing...potatoes, carrots, onions and garlic are all small. I'm wondering if my soil was too compact? Thoughts?

Is it super hot where you are? Root crop generally do well in cool weather. Just a thought off the top o' my brain. :clownshoes:
