And wet means nothing to them. That is nice. Dunk the whole thing in water, shake it off and you're good to go.
Also, you get a big enough pile of magnesium shavings, and you can light wet twigs. That is like one step away from being magic.

Maybe I just need to practice my bird's nest skills to get that magnifying glass to start fire for me.

On ANOTHER side note, while I was out messing with fire, I decided to try chert and pyrite. It will spark, just not well. I don't have any chunks of plain-old flint lying around to play with. I've also heard people using pyrite and quartz. I couldn't get spark from that. If someone could start a fire with flint and pyrite, I'd be straight-up impressed, like I am with bow-drill. That, to me, is the pinnacle of fire-making skill.

You know, Lynn, your 'playing with making fire' reminds me of my own interest in this same thing that has somehow been pushed to the side while learning to do hand laundering and establishing my garden and garden skills has moved to the forefront.

In my financially challenged world this Poor Man's Prepping thread was and is becoming more so the most important general equation for my personal prepping. Education, suggestions, leads, reminders and all of them from the perspective of financial challenge.

Have you tried a smaller fresnel lens? Like the bookmark or page sized reading magnifiers? (This is on my to-do list for summer, just trying to take advantage of others' experience.)

The In the Rabbit Hole, urban Survival guys have a good podcast Episode 67: Survival Gear on selecting and buying gear. It's refreshingly less "what to buy", and more "what to ask". They address the necessity of splashing out to get top-of-the-line gear, which is a issue for many of us. Their calm, laid back, non-alarmist style would make this a nice cast to send to a new ant (or receptive grasshopper).

Here's my high-tech water boiling and cook system. The whole thing cost under a buck - CDN or US! And it even came with spaghetti sauce.

To revisit the "hiding preps in plain sight" topic, this Storage Sofa would be a nice project. It could also function as both sofa and bed in a studio apartment.

zombiepreparation wrote:I have now saved enough laundry money to buy the Breathing Mobile Washer, which is the heavy plastic version of the Rapid Washer. (excitement!) The Rapid Washer being the original 19th century design made out of tinned steel, not plastic. Several people have said in the internet that the R.W. is heavier, prone to rusting if not always dried, and 'can' damage clothes with its sharp edges if it gets bent so I chose the plastic version. They are both sold at Lehman's. I don't really know anything about the store myself, I just keep reading its name in my research.

Anyway, excitement over today's purchase of the Breathing Mobil Washer. I washed curtains of all kinds this week-end, none of which I have ever had $$ to wash before this hand laundering thing came up. 8-) With the B.M.W. I'm going to go for...... quilts & blankets!

Here is my update on my goin' native all hand washing laundry: The Breathing Mobile Washer plunger-type thing is G.R.E.A.T.!! Works perfectly in my 5 gallon bucket in my shower. Washes really good with very little effort from me, in fact I luv doing the laundry now.

I wake and immediately wash a bucket of laundry. I 'want' to wash that bucket of laundry. I'm getting something out of this that is more than just clean laundry. I like the simple exercise routine I've organized with that plunger and the bucket and I've refined it so I do not use my back in this method; torso straight, standing over bucket, arms locked & hands gripping the handle like a golf club, letting my legs do all the work. It is fast, I get lots of water splashing my legs and feet, it is fun, and I'm being totally successful in washing everything I tackle. I highly highly recommend having one of these for a prepper.

I never have a pile of laundry waiting to be done. Sheets are washed fast and easily. Drying jeans by letting them hang over portable shower rods dries them so they dry without a wrinkle to be found. And I quite enjoy the quick daily labor intensive work of washing and hanging out to dry. Go figure.

Lehman's also sells that Wonder Washer item. <drool> Most of the things I read about the Wonder Washer are that it is sold by The Laundry Alternative, Inc. But I very much think it is "Buyer Beware" with The Laundry Alternative, Inc. because their customer service is virtually non-existent and they have lots of angry customers with broken products getting nowhere, ever, and this has been going on for years. I think these Washers are being produced at one single factory so I 'think' they are all going to be the exact same quality, which makes my deciding factor to be purchasing one from a seller who has good customer service... which The Laundry Alternative, Inc. ain't got.

I have now saved enough in laundry costs that I am affording to purchase the Wonder Washer from Lehman's in the next couple of days to add to my home launderette. I feel that this will round out my prepper laundry needs for self sufficiency in case of Zombie attacks. I will be armed with learning to 'hand' hand wash that I used first until I'd save enough to buy the Breathing Mobile Washer plunger-thing, and I really think this Wonder Washer is going to add another level of home laundering.

I am purchasing from Lehman's, NOT The Laundry Alternative, Inc because Lehman's seems to have good customer relations and TLA, Inc seems to have very very bad customer relations. This WW will probably be a simple heavy plastic contraption so will need to be used with respect to get it to last as long as I want it to, but like the Breathing Mobile Washer plunger-thing that I luv and that works so easily and well, I believe the Wonder Washer will have its own niche in my home laundering. I think I am really going to take to it like I did the plunger.

And allllll my research is saying steer clear of alllll those little electric spin dryers. (rats) Lots of problems and lots of lemons. I don't even think I will ever be interested in the BIG salad spinner for a spin dryer either. It is said to be inefficient, costs big bucks, and I am still doing quite good with my bucket drainer and hand wringing.

I'm standing by this. I have found nothing that says any differently, even now adding these spin dryers are not only breaking down after short time but also people are reporting damage to their clothing from parts poorly disigned.

I will be not only content with my bucket, plunger, and little hand turning washer, I bet I'll still be actually enjoying doing laundry daily. It has to be daily or I could get overwhelmed with a basket full of dirty laundry. Besides, doing little bits of laundry daily is adding something very real and tangible to the quality of my life in several directions, for heavens sake. Is that bizarre or what. I certainly would have could have never that the act of doing laundry would 'add' something to the quality of my life. 8-)

But there it is in my Poor Man's Prepping: Hand laundering and luving it. I highly recommend the 5 gallon bucket/Breathing Mobil Washer plunger-thing for prepping and as it had turned out for me, just plain old daily not putting coins in the laundry washers & dryers, and having cleaner wash and extra $$ to prep with.

Cheapest I''ve found is the 50# bags at Sam's. Looks like that'd be about $. 36/#. (regional variation exists but is small). LDS cannery price is(just the bulk rice, not the cans&stuff) is actually more than that. I've never couponed rice, but I'm a newb. (I am talking about enriched long grain, not instant or parboiled. They might be good for your rotating 3-month supply, very convenient in a short term disaster, just wouldn't have the 30 years storage life I don't think...)

We don't get rice coupons very often is why I asked and even then, really? It's a pita to buy and store 1lb at a time..lol

For plain white rice, buying small bags... 1lb and the like, expect to pay about $1 per pound. This is also about the same price we pay for good brown rice in 20lb bags. I haven't checked out the big bags at Sams and the like. We don't have the space for that much.

I'm rather interested in the LDS canned rice. It'd be great even if it worked out to 50-60 cents per pound, considering its longevity and immunity to bugs/rodents.

EDIT: a #10 can holds 5.5 lb. A case of 6 #10 cans costs $30.75 on the LDS online store, so 30.75/(5.5*6)= about 93 cents per pound through LDS. But that's already packed in #10 cans, so....

I get 1lb bags free w/coupon. The issue is that we don't get the coupon very often and since we eat what we store, I'm low (down to 10lbs I believe). So I need to stock SOME to run until the next coupon comes out and then likely double what I "buy" then. I've just not paid for rice in so long that I'm not sure what a good price is..lol.

I did notice that my Save A Lot has 3lbs bags of white rice for $1.99 so .66/lb which IS cheaper than if I'd go to the other stores and pick it up 1lb at a time.

Last time I was at Costco, it was around $10 for a 25 lb bag.

The local Chinese market had 50lb bags for $24.

Thanks..I don't have a Costco or Sam's nearby but it's a good jumping off place for a price point.

Was buying 3 pound bags of rice for 1.29 at food lion, now it 2.19. Can we say price inflation!!!

Saw sam's has 25 pound bags for like $9.

food lions prices
Tuna was .61 now .67
bannans .54 now .59

Priced Aldi's .48 canned goods compared to .67 at food lion.

This reporting prices is of great use to me. Thanks.

Since I buy such small quantities and so seldom I find myself sliding into the place where I stop paying attention; attention to what's happing in pricing and attention to when prices are in a place that I need to just go out and spend money on some item(s) of food because this is the time to do it, and just find a way to make it happen whether I would normally think I could or not.

Those price differences are disturbing to me.

Just using dizie's prices, it's worth spending the extra $7 to get the 25lb bag instead of the 3lb bag and get 22 more pounds of rice.

3lbs @ $2.19 = $.73/lb
25lbs @ $9 = $.36/lb

So half as expensive.

Just as a heads up, 25lbs of rice will fill approximately 7 2liter bottles.

Save a lot
6pk ramen .99

family doller
5pk ramen .99

food lion
5pk ramen 1.29

I know we are talking pennies, but a penny saved is a penny earned.

Wish I could figure out the xtreme coupon thing.
