Solar Panels and your BOV...

Postby Kyle Ryder » Thu May 24, 2012 7:51 pm

Ok, so you've got your solar panels on your BOL, but what about your BOV?
If you have to roll and the SHTF you might need solar to keep your appliances going, along with a voltage regulator + a decent leisure / Deep-Cell battery to store it all in...

This is my machine of BOV'ing and it's been quite a pet project. I go out in this thing all over the place, over the seas and bouncing up and down the countryside.
She's a worn battlebeast in some ways but she keep's on truckin'.

Now the key areas you have to remember is that solar panels DON'T 'run-out'.
They have no working parts like a wind-turbine nor do they require liquid fuel either. :)
If ever the fuel supply dries up completely this BOV will be parked up and used as a shelter / power-supply nexus / workshop :)

Now what are you waiting for?
Get cracking and putting some solar pedal to the BOV metal! :)

It's interesting and I can see where some folk would have an application for solar on their BOV, but I don't.

For a dedicated BOV rarely used, a solar trickle chrger would be a nice thing to have, as would an camper where you want to remain off the grid and avoid a generator, someone who runs a lot of comms gear, or someone wanting to charge the batteries on their hybrid vehicle. All very narrow applications, and keep in mind that the extra weight you carry around in batteries will impact your fuel economy negatively.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, please. I'm saying the practical applications are narrow.

Actually about to add two more panels up there. Not quite happy with the recharge rate when running the fridge on it.

Nice choice in cells - the panels can be salvaged/repaired in the event of damage (really big hail or the odd bullet hole. The amorphous solar cell panels have to be tossed.

Nice rig.

I get a kick out of converted Duce or Unimog campers...

cmxterra- Are those gel or lead-acid batteries? I only ask because LA need to be vented to the outside air. They look like gel.

They are AGM. And for the very reason that they don't need to be vented.
