Chantrea brings up a good point. Grandmas tend to become possessive over babies. Plus, they think they know everything because they gave YOU birth 25 some years ago. You have to lightly put them in their place. Advices are welcome, but you are the parents and YOU know better! Advices and telling you what to do are two very different things.

Great list...

The only helpful tip I have is to pack some olive oil. Right after the baby is born, and the first diaper is about to be put on...slather up the baby's tush. The meconium (spelling) is like TAR, and the olive oil will really help in those first few diaper changes- epecially when its 2 am, and you are applying cold wet wipes to the tush.... Keep up the olive oil till you get real poops, then its not needed.

Congrats!!

Congratulations!

your kit looks good. I'd recommend adding an alarm clock of some sort. Mom is going to want to feed the baby every few hours but she needs her sleep too. She's going to be wired and exhausted all at the same time. Going to sleep will be tough but if she eh as an alarm, and knows she isn't going to sleep through a feeding, she may relax easier.

Snacks and drinks are going to come in handy too. You don't want to be running down to the cafeteria.

I'm gonna jump in here. I have nothing of value to add to the lists already given b/c it's all been covered but have you considered cooking meals ahead of time and freezing them? You guys are gonna be busy and unless you want to eat out of the microwave for a few weeks, it's never a bad idea. There are plenty of recipes that freeze very well so you can start cooking now, find a spot in your freezer then thaw after baby comes. She's going to need actual nutrition (especially if she's breast feeding) and the typical frozen/boxed/quick meal isn't going to provide that.

Just an idea.

Oh and Maalox..IF you have an issue with diaper rash at any point, it works a bit better than the typical diaper rash cream. Use a cotton ball and wipe on small tush. Works like a charm.

Oh and congrats on the tiny one. :)

Something to consider is a folder with copies of documents such as, all insurance information, instructions from doctor, any kind of birth plan for the wife if she has any thing specific she wants done, copies of drivers licenses, emergency contact information.

I know we prepare for the apocalypse, but we must also be mindful of the fact that we still like in a paper driven world that LOVES to keep records and things like this make life much easier.

Funny, we are expecting a girl in February, and just today started putting together my tactical diaper bag. My gf has been teasing me about it for months now. Come on here, and lo and behold. Lol. I'm using a spare maxpedition jumbo fatboy. Orange/ foliage.

Love the Multi cam on that bag, but still a bit too diaper bag-esque for me.

Used the search function to find this post.

This is extremely important to have, for any emergency. And I would suggest you make duplicates of documents and verify the duplicates at a notary office (in Croatia we have to do this, otherwise the documents have no legal weight and are considered worthless).

By documents I truly mean everything, birth certificates, pink slips... land ownership documents... everything.

Second on this. After 6 kids one of my favorite things when exhausted was real food.
Someone bringing a casserole when they visited became my new friend.

Um.... not going to agree here.
Now meconium is sterile, but the diaper, wipes, and hands aren't.
And unless you get all that oil cleaned off each time (very hard without soap, which will dry out the new skin if you have to use it every diaper change), that oil is trapping bacteria near babe's skin. So you might save yourself some time wiping away the meconium, but you may set yourself up for boils on somebodies tush.
We don't recommend any wipes with lotions or alcohol for the 1st month because of the increased risk of boils and diaper/yeast issues on newborns.
And I end up taking care of a couple kids every month from parents who ignore that and end up coming in for I&D's on their kid's nether regions because they now have nasty boils. Followed by either a shot of ATB's or more often a course of IV ATB's. IV is the preferred course because it takes such a short time for a newborn to go from healthy to, well.... you just don't want the alternative.

So take a little time, put up with some fussing, and clean up the meconium without the oil.

And as a side note, don't forget yourself dad.
One time I went to a room only to find everything in their bags all over the floor and the mom (who was just a few hours post op from a C Section) trying to hold her incision while both crying and laughing at the same time.
I asked if she was ok, and what I could do to help.
She pointed at dad, and said that he had made her pack and unpack her bags several times over the last few months to make sure she was completely ready. He had also packed and repacked the diaper bag just to make sure that they had everything they could possibly need.
This was because they had intended to travel to visit relatives and would be far from home should she go into labor.
Well, she did, and here they were. Mom and babe were set.

He just happened to forget to pack anything for himself. And they lived several hours from the hospital.
And she told EVERYONE who entered the room just what had happened....
