50/50 mix of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and kerosene.

ETA: actually I wouldn't wait for the apocalypse to use this. It is, in fact, what I use now.

My instructor for my NRA Basic Pistol course used motor oil. Not sure what I think about it but he shoots his Glock frequently...

wd-40. But I heard that it collects dust pretty easy. Might be wrong just what I heard.

In my experience, WD-40 is a good degreaser, but a shitty lube.

Won't WD-40 evaporate eventually ?

WD-40 was designed as a water displacement formula. The 40th try in fact.

Any light lubricating properties are by accident.

wikipedia
This is diluted with a volatile hydrocarbon to give a low viscosity fluid which can be sprayed and thus penetrate crevices. The volatile hydrocarbon then evaporates, "leaving the oil behind".

You could use rendered animal fats. From memory, fats rendered from red-meat animals will be solid at room temp, where as fats rendered from white-meat animals should be liquid at room temp. Use some google-fu if you want as that's just from memory.

Animal fats probably wouldn't smell the nicest, but if you're stuck and your weapon requires it, might be what you need.
But in all reality, my bolt and lever guns don't require much oil, usually a little drop down the firing pin port to prevent light striking(in my .22), and a little in my lever on the slide rails(M92).

A little bottle of oil used sparingly would/should last you a long time(SHOULD, as I've dropped one with the lid off before  )
So, YMMV.

Cheers,
Sean.
I'd rather have it, and not need it, than need it, and not have it!

You'd be surprised how many things the grease from the side of your nose will work for.

I still remember a party my freshman year - a lifetime ago - where a girl set a nice foamy draft down in front of me. She'd brought one for each of us. She apologized for it having "so much" foam, and she rubbed her fingertip against the side of her nose then dipped that same fingertip very briefly into the rim of my glass...whereupon the nice fluffy head on my beer just disintegrated, and I was left facing a glass of slightly flat headless beer with her damn nose wax in it. I didn't want to drink it but I didn't want to hurt her feelings, so I "accidentally" knocked it over, then apologized profusely and got up to get another beer. I didn't spill it on her or anything, but she was gone by the time I came back to our table. Later that night she described me to a friend of hers as a "fookin clutz" or something similar.

Too bad nothing else ever happened between us. If I'd settled down with her, who knows, I might never have had to buy a bottle of gun oil...

A strangely poignant vignette complete with teen angst, sexual tension, a tinge of regret perhaps? Plus beer, college life and differences in attitudes about personal sanitation. All in a post ostensibly about gun oil.

I use transmission fluid and kerosene as a solvent currently.

For a lubricant, 40W motor oil works great.

Believe it or not, I've seen my Afghani counterparts run EVOO and/or palm oil through their RPKs with absolutely no problem.
