Pipe smoking tips

I am an occasional pipe smoker. I've been smoking a pipe for years, off and on, but I still wouldn't consider myself an expert.
Pipes seem to have gone out of favor with the convenience of cigarettes. I was delightfully surprised to hear about so many of you being interested in one of my favorite relaxation therapy. It's not about the quick fix of nicotine for me. So here is what I've learned.
Carving the pipe itself is an art form, they have competions to come out with the coolest designs. They are then highly sought after by collectors and go for big bucks. There are several big names and more collectible pipes out there. They can be pretty pricey but you don't have to spend a bunch to get started. Some one mentioned the difficulty of finding pipe in tobacco shops these days, and the ones you get in drug store and convienience stores are not thay great. The internet is a great way to find a pipe shop near you or not near you but who ships. There are a bunch of websites and videos on youtube to show you how to pack a pipe and light it. This takes some practice.
Ebay is a great resource for tools and accessories. You can by what we call estate pipes for pretty cheap. Sometimes in big lots. An estate pipe is just a used pipe. One of my favorites is an estate pipe that I found in an antique shop. It's probably older than me. It may sound gross to smoke someone elses pipe but they are easy to sterilize.
How to get started. Find an inexsensive briar pipe. Avoid the ones with the little card board tube filters but you may want the one with a filter of some type. I have a couple with a little metal piece that keeps you from getting bits of tobacco in your stem and mouth. If you're fortunate enough to have a really good tobacco shop close by, they usually have a selection of decent briar pipes ranging from your pick of a bunch from $5 on up. Stay away from painted or laquered pipes. What style should you get? Which ever one that suits your fancy. I started with a small straight stem pipe. I still use it as my knock around pipe. I don't worry about it getting damaged in my saddle bags or in my back pack. I also have a few other styles, one of which was an expensive present from my wife and is reserved for special occasions it all depends on my mood I guess.
At the same time you should pick up some pipe cleaners, a tamper and bowl scraper. These range from as cheap as a nail with a large head and the point end flattened out to gold plate ornate works of art. Next is the tabacco. Again you will have an abundace of choices and blends, I like the an aromatic sometimes and the some times and I keep a supply of basic every day smoke. Pick up a few onces of several different types and find your own favorites, thats half the fun.
Got a light? Traditionally, pipes are lit with wooden matches. Regular lighters can burn the top of the pipes bowl. The same goes with the torch type cigar lighters. They make specially designed pipe lighters and I would sugest you get one eventually, but use what you've got, just be careful of the bowl.
The most important part, enjoy learning and developing your tecnique. I like to smoke a bowl with a fine scotch in the evening and/or in the morning while my coffee is brewing.

This is a great post! My grandfather used to smoke pipes and was interested in getting into it, I currently have everything for cigar smoking currently, its an uphill battle talking my wife into letting me buy the stuff. My grandfather passed 30 years ago and I haven't found any of his pipes or pipe stuff, but it may be worth a second look...

Rabbit Tobacco...Nice. Grows everywhere here in South Kentucky. Burns like a sum-bitch. I gave up the smokes for the Dip. 50 y/o and breathe much better. Now keep a par level of 25 rolls in the freezer to dip, trade and barter should that be needed. In a TEOTWAWKI situation Nictotine is Gold

It's not to bad. I've got a greenhouse in y barn loft and me and my neighbor grow there. I grow the plants and we harvest them and then he does the rest in his shed He bought just for it. After packs in Ny hit 8 bucks I said screw it.

Hey everyone:

I have one smoke left and then that's it. I'm done with smoking. For me, The only way to get thru the PAW is not to be in the market for it. Also, I need the money for preps, here and now. So far, I'm the proud owner of a Mossberg 500A and I've put a down payment on a Charter Arms Target BullDog!

that aside, Tobacco will be a highly sough after item in the PAW. Those who are jonesing will not care if it is pipe, chew, rollie, etc. They will be after the nicotine.

Now to have my final smoke and then become a non-smoker.

I'm gonna resurrect a semi-dead thread to tell my experience with nicotine addition.

I joined the Army when I was 34. At that point in my life I had been dipping for over 20 years. There was rarely a waking moment (and occasionally sleeping, by accident) that I didn't have a dip in. I could even eat with one in. Stopped actually spitting a long time ago.
Knowing that dip typically has roughly 10x the amount of nicotine that a cigarette has, anyone who has ever quit smoking can appreciate my concern about going away to Basic where tobacco use is strictly forbidden. At no real point through my training did I noticeably feel the effects of withdrawal. Rarely even thought of it, and then only when someone mentioned it. (Sure would have been perfect on road marches.) I can only attribute it to the induced stress level and having myself kept occupied for those 11 weeks. I would think that the stress and keeping busy just staying alive in a SHTF situation would help the mind off of the addiction as well.

And just to show what a dumb ass I am, even though I was finally free of the physical addiction to dip, at first opportunity I bought a can of Cope on the way to AIT.

Well when I was in the field lighting my smokes and smoking (taking a drag) your Cherry glows bright and can be seen for a while at night, a long with the smell of smoke. So for these things it was frowned down on giving you locations ( or stash / hiding places) away. So I used Dip witch is better to be comsealed as long as your not doing the finger packing to often. Just a few more things to think about along with storage of possible items because they go stale so fast even if not opened.

Man I'm glad I quit 3 years ago!

I'm going to try chantix to quit, apparently $5 a pack is my breaking point, and everytime I buy a pack I feel guilty. It adds up so fast and I'm turning 30 next month.. lungs are in bad shape.

I could be storing a lot more preps with that money....

I learned from some others not to touch the stuff. My grandfather, great man, died from lung cancer when I was 14, so that deterred me from trying it as a teen. Now I work at a convenience store on the edge of a low income area and it pains me when I see people shaking so bad that they had trouble counting nickels and dimes to get the cheapest pack of smokes that we sell, and still turning away some of them because they are too short. My personal opinion is that you can and should quit now so you don't have to be suffering from as bad of a withdrawal like the souls I see too often.
When I was born, they told me the chance of getting out of this life alive was slim.

I started rolling my own cigarettes several months ago and have been AMAZED at the savings!
I bought the Gambler rolling machine ($35.99) and a humidor ($1.75) for the tobacco (black ball shown on the machine)
This was initial cost, a little more than what I used to pay for a carton of Pall Malls.
http://www.smokersdiscounts.com/cigars/p-149-gambler-cigarette-machine-tube-cut.aspx
Image
On my last trip to the tobacco shop I spent $45.
This purchased 2 large bags of Kentucky's Best Tobacco and 6 cartons of tubes.
http://www.kybestpipe.com/
http://indianrivertobacco.com/content/zen-light-cigarette-tubes-250-ct
This should be equilvalent to about 9 cartons of cigarettes, which would have cost about $270.00
$5.00 per carton rolling my own vs. $30-$50 per carton store bought. Need I say more?
I love the ideas you have all given, thank you!
I believe I will be purchasing extra tobacco (to store in mason jars) and extra cartons of tubes. I truly feel this will be a great bartering tool in the ZPAW!

I've heard using flavors dissolved in grain alcohol spayed on the leaves as they dry over time will impart good flavor. No experience with that though.

You need to quit cold turkey, all those gum and patches do is prolong the pain and make it harder. After 2 or 3 days you will be fine.. Plus how can you fight zombies with a ciggarette in your hand? Your a USMC so quitting smoking is not a big deal..

I was a pretty heavy smoker but this book helped me quit for good.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Easy-Way-Stop ... 1402718616

I read it and followed the plan, which really is easy, and when I put out my last smoke, I really felt like I had quit for good. That same night I went and hung out at a local motorcycle clubhouse, had a few beers and hung out with a bunch of smokers, which in the past would have knocked me right off the wagon, but I truly had no desire to smoke and haven't since (over 4 years).
