Actually, its a toss up from Pen Argyl to me or Tannersville to me. It just depends on where I'm going that day. I joke about it, but I really am 15 minutes from nowhere. I run through 30 lbs of Beneful in about 1.5 months. That's at 14 ounces twice a day. Even if its a bit more expensive, I'm good with it.

Out for our routine patrol of West Bangor, Pa with myself, Riley the Zombie Response Dog and Wally the Basset Hound on tracking duty. Equip: EDC, patrol gear for me and 13 lb ruck for Riley. This is really a lovely neighborhood to walk in as evidenced by the number of my neighbors doing just that. Two things to report on this patrol.

1) The ominpresent herd of deer were spotted moving and as I closed in on them one of their flankers 20 yards or so from the herd came running out of the woods and crossed our path about 10 feet in front of us. This, quite frankly, scarred the crap out of all involved. the Sound of hooves on pavement alone was enough to give one pause.

2) I am really digging this Zombie Run app. It is amazing how immersed one can become. Photo recon attached.

Ready boss? The crew heading out.

Riley and Wally not alerting. This is because the fellow in the background at the end of the street is walk-ing not a Walk-er.

Image
This is my street, the Appalachian Trail (AT) runs along that ridge in the background, Not bad eh? My nemesis the deer herd live in a 1 mile tract at the base of this ridge.

Screen-shot of Zombies Run! I am the round dot in the middle and the yellow flag is my destination. The green things are the zombies and turn red when in proximity and they see you and start their attack.

Zombie, Run app

Postby CTratterriers » Sun Apr 08, 2012 3:10 pm

I just downloaded this app to my Droid & have a few questions. Can you listen to music while playing this app/game? Do you constantly have to look at the screen to play? I love trail running, however I carry my phone in a storage belt so my hands are free. I also enjoy listening to music when I run so I'm concerned that I will not be able to hear the game.

Thanks,
Claire in CT

Routine Patrols of West Bangor with Riley the Zombie Response Dog have found some increased teenage mischief which hopefully we are keeping at bay in a neighborhood watchy sort of way (which is worse a horde of zombies or teens...you decide) The herd of deer is still about and a new player to the mean streets of West Bangor... 5 (five) freakin' Black Bears. Yup a "herd" of bears right outside my house. This is getting ridiculous. I am adding a bear whistle to my EDC and as they say in drill I will "continue to march".

[transmit]
ZS COM-OPS PRIORITY COMMUNICATION 19:36HRS ZULU 14 MAY 2012.............................................................
<<It is with a measure of sadness that ZS Command-OPs reports all attempts to contact BlueSilkRibbon and his K-9 zombie patrol unit have met with abject failure. The last confirmed contact with this advance team was 24 April at 2030 hours. As the most recent reports indicated greatly increased undead activity in northeast Pennsylvania at that time, we are at this point reluctantly listing BSR and Riley (ZRD) as officially missing in action.

Now folks, while MIA is not automatically analogous to KIA or even TUIA (Turned Undead In Action), and while we occasionally have positive resolutions to these situations, we must accept the cold hard facts and what this probably means. All we can do at this point is wait, hope and honor this courageous team for the outstanding contributions they have made to the anti-undead campaign to date. That, and continue air-dropping caches of Beggin' Strips and Red Stripe beer in hopes BSR and Riley have somehow managed to stay alive in an extremely hostile environment.

Any, and I mean any intel any of you have on the status, whereabouts or last known activities of this valuable dual species Zombie Response asset are strongly encouraged to report to Command-OPs post haste.

Be alert, be brave and above all, don't lose hope. >> [/end transmission]

Dateline: West Bangor, Pennsylvania
1) Majorhavoc you still rock.
2) Reports of my demise have been marginally exaggerated. The local patrolling continues at Riley, the Zombie Response Dog’s insistence if not at my own but very wet weather is keeping us out of the woods (mud+thick fur =Riley howling outside all night and cousin that boy can howl!). In addition it is hard for me to be witty with any kind of frequency. We have planned for some patrols in some new areas where Zed activity is likely so stay tuned and get out there with your dogs or kids and keep the Walkers pushed back.

Respectfully,

AFTER ACTION REPORT:
Weekly (at this point monthly) patrol of the Appalachian Trail. The torrential rains have turned the AT into a green tunnel but at least the mud is finally gone. The team consisted of myself (BSR) and Riley, the Zombie Response Dog. Equipment: EDC for me, 13 lb ruck for Riley (reduced weight due to high ambient temp) and my trusty Samsung Infuse with which I do my photorecon and everything else. No Zeds where noted but two close calls. One of these close calls was a through-hiker(a bit early). A through hiker is someone walking the entire trail from Gerogia to Maine or vice versa. Through-hikers can be easily mistaken for zombies in that they both stumble down the trail with a vacant gaze, moaning. The key in identifying them to prevent tragedies is zombies moan "Braiiins... and through-hikers moan "Ice-Creammm". Many day hikers were also noted, again perplexed as to if I am really patrolling for zombies or just a fat guy walking his dog.... Phote recon attached. Today I added a bonus, for all of my ZS brothers and sisters unable to get out and patrol, I have added a small video so that you may do a virtual patrol in the POV mode.

My God soldier! Incredible! We had all but written you off! Good to hear that you and Riley survived that surge of undead activity. Yes. Ah, excellent tactical judgment. Quite right of course that you, uh, elected to lay low and let the main body of the horde pass by. Just as we at headquarters had surmised. Um, obviously we knew this was the likely and most prudent course of action. Ahem, at no point during your recent communications silence did we, uh, ever, uh entertain any consideration of your death/loss/turn to undead status. Naturally we all immediately assumed you and Riley were ah, ahem .... following standard procedure as per ZS Basic Ops and Tactics Training Manual rev. 1987, Section H(1)b; Evasion and Survival, paragraph three, to wit:

"...... in such situations when faced with overwhelming numbers of undead, ZS personnel are advised to temporarily cease patrol operations and seek refuge in a remote, preferably fortified defensive position and adopt a posture of minimal auditory and visual profile, even at the expense of scheduled communications with headquarters, for as long as required to ensure maximum survivability until the threat has moved beyond your designated area of operations. Administer alcoholic libations and canine positive behavioral reinforcement rations as needed to facilitate the lowest auditory profile feasible (ie, drink yourself into a stupor; bribe animal to keep quiet). Resume operations/command communications only when the threat has passed and you have slept off your inevitable hangover."

And of course, excellent photo and video recon. HQ took particular interest in your video upload, particularly Riley (ZRD)'s alerting behavior at time stamp 0:1:45. Excellent work, by the way, panning the camera towards the area Riley was alerted to. HQ Data Analysis and Intelligence ran your footage through our standard suite of infrared spectrometry and pixel enhancement algorithmic analysis. You might be interested in the following declassified results of our analysis of your data.

First this is your visual field as captured at time stamp 0:1:54 when run through the infrared filter:

Image

Pixel enhancement algorithmic analysis revealed several anomalies which piqued our interest. Imagine our excitement when computer tomography identified a possible undead contact in the upper left quadrant.

Image

Image enhancement revealed, to our disappointment, that no actual infected individual was present in that part of the picture, merely some indigenous fauna the we find wholly uninteresting.

Image

The other anomalies were likewise revealed to be false alarms of scant interest to ZS. For instance mass spectrometry of the anomaly in the lower right quadrant initially revealed the following:

Image

But sadly, successive passes by computer image enhancement filters revealed the object to be anything but a zombie:

Image

BlueSilkRibbon: don't let these obvious disappointments on you patrols up to now dampen your enthusiasm for the valuable service you and Riley provide to Zombie Squad. Nor allow the trend of unremarkable contacts to blunt your situational awareness. Eventually you and Riley will encounter the undead in the (decomposing) flesh, and you must remain ever vigilant and ready for that first encounter.

Keep up the good work and good to have your team back to operational status.

In Northeastern Pennsylvania we patrol our neighborhoods with dogs to ensure there is no zombie encroachment. The fact that this gives us vital exercise and time with our dogs is just a happy coincidence. Yesterday we were on patrol at Jacobsburg State Park in Belfast, Pa. A known zombie habitat with my Zombie Response Dog "Riley" a crossbreed Bernese Mountain Dog/Labrador Retriever or "Labernese". This breed is being bred in Canada as service dogs and zombie hunters. Riley is sporting his new Zack and Zoey pack. Note how when Riley smells a zombie (or in this case a dead squirrel) he has been trained to alert by forming the letter "Z" with his tail.

ROFL! That is preceisely what Riley, the Zombie Response Dog looks like when not patrolling except he requires a loveseat at minimum and preferably a sofa to get into "position". Get him into the bush mate, he looks like he could be a gamer!

Mission Profile:
Weekly patrol of AT from Fox Gap to Wolf Rocks. Recent activity/attacks in Maryland and Florida have us stepping up our patrolling. By being vigilant, consistent and incorporating K9's, that shit doesn't happen in Northeastern Pa. Today part of our mission will be to relieve the "day shift" in the Wolf Rocks sector and perform monthly checks of Zombie First Aid Kits.

Personnel: Myself and Riley the Zombie Response Dog.

Equipment: EDC, raingear and 30 lb ruck for me 22 lb ruck for Riley (ZRD)

After action report: After a stifling few days of heat the weather broke today and gave us some ideal patrolling weather. Frankly after the news coming out of Maryland we were heading out regardless. The only problem encountered was that Team 1 (day shift) was using two dogs and the overly marked trail caused Riley, the Zombie Response Dog to remark every spot. This significantly slows down the patrol but dog urine is a know zombie repellent so its all good. We had never actually met Team 1 until today because of the rotating patrol schedule but since we are going to twice daily patrols (and perhaps more) I am sure we will ALL become close. These are in addition to the twice daily West Bangor patrols we are already responsible for. Photo recon attached.

Image
Heading out. Riley (ZRD) scanning the woods. Geez he is a good looking dog.

Image
Relieving Team 1 (day shift). As you can see we take perimeter defense seriously in Pennsylvania and get our kids involved at an early age.
As you can see Team 1 prefers to use Pit Bulls, hard to argue they are a great dog and I have one myself, but nobody beats Riley at Zombie detection. Team 1 leader carries a Bear Grylls knife, we are going to have to talk about that...

Image
The Zombie First Aid Kits we are servicing today are strategically located at 1/4 mile intervals along the AT through our sector. They are difficult to find unless you know where to look (to prevent tampering). They can be found if you are looking closely by the tell-tale orange accessory cord securing them to trees.

Image
Example of one of our Zombie First Aid Kits, my ruck and Riley (ZRD)

Image
The Zombie First Aid Kits are modular and adapt to being carried by ZRD's.

Image
At the turnaround Riley (ZRD) gets a drink. Keep yourself and your team hydrated in this weather.
