S&W Model 19 age???

Postby Cobes » Fri May 11, 2012 11:58 pm

First off I would like to thank all of you that will have some positive input. I have been wandering around these forums for quite some time and this is my first post. I need some honest help without someone trying to sell me a whole new gun.

My mother is giving me her model 19. First off, I'm not even sure if that is what it is, I'm guessing. (fairly new to the gun game, but have some.) It was given to her by her father, but not too long ago. So i was wondering if there was a way to find out the round about age. Through changes in the body style/stamp through the years to serial number. I really don't know where to start and I have tried. I will try to get a picture on here soon if that would help.

Thank you in advance for the feedback.

hey, once you get a pic up i may be able to help a bit. there are a few marks and mfg. styles that can help date a gun.

For a real quick rough date, swing the cylinder out. Where the crane rests when it is close should be a stamp that will say 19-X, or possibly just 19. Check the S&W Model 19 wiki, and they will list which years -1 through -6 (I think they went to 6) where produced, and what the changes with each revision where.

If you post the serial number, with XXX as the last 3 numbers, I can give you it's age.

The Smith 19 is a DAMN fine piece. I know you're curious about the age, but honestly it's likely to be perfectly functional when it's passed down to your great grand kids. So age, neat to know... not really a factor outside of that.

If you reference the above link, you will see that you may have either a model 19 or a model 66. Run those numbers to be certain!

I was referring to yours.

The serial number will not identify the gun model.

The model 19 is carbon steel whereas the model 66 is stainless steel. .but I guess everybody already knows that.
