What kind of bears are we talking? In my opinion, .44mag would be enough for most black bears in my area (we're not that far apart geographically), but if you could realistically be taking aim at a Grizzly in your area, go with the 45-70.
If you're taking aim at a Bear Grylls, use anything and everything you can, resist the urge to piss on the corpse, as this will bring him back to life, and we'll have to endure Zombie vs. Wild.
