on a rifle that would be used for field application. should i go up to 44mag or climb higher to 45-70 ?

it would be a field/bush/deer/ bear defense rifle.

What kind of bears are we talking? In my opinion, .44mag would be enough for most black bears in my area (we're not that far apart geographically), but if you could realistically be taking aim at a Grizzly in your area, go with the 45-70.

If you're taking aim at a Bear Grylls, use anything and everything you can, resist the urge to piss on the corpse, as this will bring him back to life, and we'll have to endure Zombie vs. Wild.

Nothing on this continent scarier than a pissed off bull moose. If that's something you think you'd ever need to put down in a hurry (not hunting, where you get to wait for a shot), go 45-70.

if it's up to me. i would never go again moose without a 308 at the MINIMUM, otherwise, 45-70 even 338 lapua to be sure. even if a close range magnum slug could be useful too.

Yeah, it has "Limited" stamped on the barrel. It was an impulse purchase at a gun show a few years ago (luckily, it was a local-ish dealer I'd bought a few other guns from, so he didn't ream me too hard).

Back to leverguns, a buddy of mine just got a Winchester Trapper in .44 Magnum from PSA really cheap. Handy little carbine, great fun to shoot. I think I am going to look for one in .30-30.

i have a Winchester Trapper in 30-30, i put a XS ghost ring rear sight with the white blade up front. its not as slick cocking as my marlin but i do enjoy it. its a handy little rig, just needs a sling.

I just can not stand how poorly crafted the shit that comes out of that shop looks. I mean some of the stuff from Sons of Guns can be , but everything that is "made" at Rick's American guns is pure dogshit (especially if the customers are actually paying the prices he quotes).

That was the reason I sold my Winchester; the cocking kind of was not awesome. But this new one, it was really smooth. Made me want one all over again, even though I talk shit about lever actions!

It's such a great round. Fun to reload and shoot. I normally would consider a Marlin, indeed I've been looking at them, but this Trapper, it was a really nice utility rifle.

I gotta say after doing the trigger job and a spring kit this is a sweet little shooter. Smooth as butter and nicely accurate. I will SBR this thing someday. One of the nicest lever guns I have ever owned. The holster is pretty ok to.
