Rattle-can and Cordura

Postby ptAltered » Mon May 07, 2012 8:46 pm

Now that I've found a builder to customize my Maxpedition Sitka I'm considering painting it in a pattern near to ATACS. Does anyone have experience using rattle can (Krylon) spray paint on Cordura? I'm concerned that the paint or the accelerants will dissolve the Cordura nylon, or that it simply won't adhere and look foolish.

That's essentially the pattern I'll be duplicating. I'm wondering if I can somehow utilize a sponge and spray paint and get this thing painted up.

Thanks ZS for your input!

Spray paint works fine on cordura. It'll stick better with light dustings of paint rather than heavy coats, which tend to flake. It won't dissolve your gear. I've heard it can even be removed from nylon with a pressure washer, but I've never tried that on any of my painted gear.

Thanks!

I'm considering modifying a khaki Sitka by adding a few blots of light green, dark gray and some foliage.

Any pictures guys might have of work they've done would be greatly appreciated!

I wish I could find the picture, but we fixed a UCP chest rig with some spray paint. It worked really well. Light coats work the best.

I've been "Kryloning" gear & weapons for years. It works great on both. I dont really worry about patterns on my gear and I think it looks even better as it starts to wear off from use.

OD TT med bag hosed down.

Fuel bottle camoed.

Kifaru EMR dusted for a trip to the desert.

Old Colt 6920 painted.

Ranger Green RACK sprayed and wearing off.

Same RACK freshly sprayed tan.

My M24 binos.

Couple OD RAID pack shots painted tan.

Camoed Nalgene bottle with the measuring hash marks left exposed for use.

Point is that it works! IMHO, YMMV......

Mags - Awesome pics man thanks for the help.

Any effect on the Durable Water Repellent coating? How light of a coating do you apply and do you tape anything off?

Also, cool gear.

I've done quite a few peices, before multicam E-tool carriers were available, I just took a woodland one did it up.........

The paint goes on the outside, so shouldn't affect the poly water resistant coating.

Anyone have a good online source for krylon in camo colors? Everywhere I look I'm only finding Rustoleum. The Krylon reportedly bonds to plastics better.

I've seen Krylon Fusion that's specifically for painting plastics. Is that what you guys are using, or is this just standard spraypaint? Either way, great pics!

Back in the day before all the tactic all nylon was available in the alphabet camp patterns, we used to rattle can our gear to match the environment all the time. Definitely due the light coats and work your way up till you get the desired result. We would let it dry in the sun then go to a laundry mat and throw it in the dryer to set the paint in a little better.
Hoping to bring back common sense to the prepping community.
