I think I am going to do an order of the the beef patties and a couple other things to try out.

You've really gotta buy them and try them that way. I have several trays, but I've never opened any just because it is going to take a lot of people to eat one. I know some of the guys at mreinfo have certainly eaten them, but even then there still aren't a lot of good reviews or pics of t-rats. One of my favorite things about them for long term storage is the fact that they have veggies, which are expensive in #10 cans, although I could certainly dehydrate my own I suppose. If you do open some please take pics and do a review.

I has a sad for the old days when longlifefoods.com sold t-rats for $8 and free shipping. I used to have a lot but traded many off. Sigboy40 owes me a review too.

Alright. Well, I like the ideal of the trays of the cooked rice and beef and gravy. Its an easy meal that can feed several people. I hope not to need to feed several people but one never knows. If stuff really did get bad, my group would go from three to six or seven so it might be handy to have larger packable meals on hand. And we eat a lot of rice anyways.

I'm deffinetly gonna try the single portion dishes I get from them. The big ones, might be a sunday dinner experiment at grandmaws house.

EDIT: Holy crap. I just saw on a different site the big packs are suppose to feed approx 18 people. Way more then I thought. But it wouldnt take it long to get gone with six or seven people. A couple meals at most. And rice will go with pretty much any thing.

How do you reheat those t-rats? Aren't they intended for use with steam tables?

It said something about you can nuke them, put the pack in boiling water, put the contents into a regular pot and reheat it on the stove or fire, so forth.

We had them in the Guard... Our spoons would heat them in boiling water. A steam table would work also.

Cant speak of the ones now, but c.1986-1990, they sucked.

around here MRE usually cost around 5$ to 6$ each. you coudl probably save tax by buying box of them

i know a place where they would even leave you choose what gonna be in the box. so you don't end up with "Hungarian goulash" or "scrambled eggs with salsa"

*edit* heat packs to heat those MRE without fire and/or smoke usually cost 1$ each. and only need a little bit of water, and work pretty well. i talk from experience, i tried them over a dozen times.

Some sites you can order just the entree and then those are normally like $2 and something. Its just seems more difficult to find places that do just eh entrees or the MRE's broken down. Cheaper Than Dirt and Emergency Essentials has them like that.

I went ahead and ordered a few off the Cheaper Than Dirt. I got two of the big trays of rice and two of the big trays of the gravy and pork. The gravy and pork was half price compared to the gravy and ground beef or the gravy and chicken. Its probably nasty and they had to mark it down to get rid of it with my luck. :D I did a case of the beef stew, case of the spaghetti, and a case of the beef patties. 12 for $24 on those, just the entree. $19 on the rice T-rats and then $11 on the T-rat gravy and pork. Not too bad a price on a good bit of chow thats easily packable.

Got those MRE's in From Cheaper Than Dirt. Those T-rats are flipping heavy. Feeding 12 people with one I can fully see. Tried the Beef patties. They are okay. Deffinetly edible but not awesome. More of a salisbury steak then just a Beef patty taste. Tasted better then the salisbury steak I got at Golden Corral last week.

During a summer camping trip with ZSNY, I brought a tray of the BBQ ribs and a tray of the corn bread stuffing with sausage...heated the trays over a fire with an old fridge pan with a half inch of water in it (camping steam tray)...8 of us finished off both trays (which were supposed to feed 15)...we were hungry, but they were also good!

I like longlifefood a lot because they don't charge shipping. You have to do a little shopping to see if their higher prices are worth it, but if you just want a few things, they used to have better prices.. I haven't bought much in the way of MREs in the last few years though so that might have changed. They used to carry 20 different kinds of t-rats and with free shipping they were a steal, sadly that isn't the case anymore.. That said, you can get on their mailing list and they'll let you know when new stuff gets in.
